Walks Like a Duck

Thursday (before Thanksgiving break). Fourth period.

Onyx: "I'm not high. But my keyboard is moving."

The computer in question was sitting stationary on the table.

This is my second full week in the class. I have Onyx in two different classes. She's been pretty mellow. But on this day...

Not high? I doubt it.

She started off by telling another student to back off. (He didn't want to listen. He felt it was his duty to not give up and help Onyx with whatever it was that was bothering her. In this I intervened letting him know that this was not the time to push.) So, to keep the peace, I had Onyx sit closer to me.

It was a drop drill day, so when Onyx got under her desk, she accused it of stabbing her in the back. (She fell on one of the table legs.) How one can fall when one is sitting on the floor...

She spent the rest of the period listening to her music. There was a bit of seat dancing. But I don't think she got much of the actual work done.

Not high? Perhaps. But something was definitely going on with her.

And she can't understand why she has a D in the class. (I attempted to explain where the problem was, but she didn't quite grasp my explanation.)

  1. To preface her comments with "I'm not high," does make one wonder. She brought it up! Maybe she'll understand the D when she isn't high. I hope she was "only" high, and nothing else is going on with her.

    1. She's a little weird when not "not high" too, so maybe not. We'll see.

  2. There is a medical condition where the sufferer perceives things are moving but they aren't. If she doesn't use drugs and this is happening (note I am not a medical professional but I do suffer from vertigo) I hope someone can get her good medical help to rule this out if this is truly an issue beyond her control. On the other hand, she could have been high. One just doesn't know. So hard to be a teacher in today's world.

    1. If other things hadn't been going on, that would have been a whole 'nother conversation. I doubt it's vertigo. She was way too much in play mode for me to take that seriously. (And I have her in class right now. She's quietly working on her quiz. I think it's fine.)

  3. Well this is concerning. If she's high, it's not helping her and if she's not high, that's much worse.

    1. This class is relatively low stress for a change. It's just a matter of trying to get the students to do what they should be doing.

    2. Fair enough.

And thanks for pointing out the confusion on my post Creep, now clarified. ~shakes head~ I had asked the lifeguard about the music *during* my swim and he stopped halfway across the natatorium to avoid intersecting paths after I got out. Heh...

  5. Kids and drugs... such a destructive combination, and very sad.

    1. Terrible story. I hope Onyx is just young and will grow out of this.

  7. Handling troublesome youngsters is tough. I'm a teacher too, I know.
