Wednesday. (This was the Wednesday before Thanksgiving break.) It was the end of first period. And the kiddos were standing at the door, waiting for the bell.
Instead of itching to get out, they were looking outside in horror. It. Was. Raining.
Me: "You all remembered your umbrellas, right?"
They looked at me blankly.
Me: "This has been all over the news. They've been forecasting rain for today for a week. Do you ever check the weather on your phones?"
They were all in long sleeves. Some had sweatshirts on. Some had hoodies. They weren't going to freeze. But they were going to get wet.
Ah well. Maybe they'll learn.
We even got thunder and lightning. The next period a lightning bolt struck so close that it knocked out the school WiFi for a bit.
But, it never rains in Southern California! :) So they even own umbrellas? I see the teens waiting for the bus, and most would rather get wet. I don't know current teen thinking, maybe umbrellas are okay, even "in." I hear Crocs are back.
ReplyDeleteYes, they own umbrellas. After last year, they should at least. It's a very soggy day if they don't bring them when it rains. (Not much cover anywhere.)
DeleteThe only time I was ever in Southern California (San Diego, to be exact, one July) I remember it rained and there were special weather warnings and a rash of car accidents because of slick roads from wet dust. This New Yorker couldn't believe it. It was as bad as ice for us. I guess this was the day it did rain in Southern California....
ReplyDeleteIt rained in July? Wow. Compound how we deal with rain (badly) with summer, and yeah, not great. (It's incredibly rare to get any rain at all from about May through October.)
DeleteWait until you introduce the topics of "snow" and "below freezing". Their minds will explode!
ReplyDeleteOnce again students are unprepared. Today they got a life lesson
ReplyDeleteBut will it stick? Unlikely.
DeleteUnlike us, these kids would absolutely know at the click of a mouse what the weather will be.
ReplyDeleteI pointed this out to them. They didn't see my point.
DeleteYou think teens even consider the weather?
ReplyDeleteNope.
DeleteToo bad, at least they had sleeves ;)
ReplyDeleteThis reminded me of when I was a teenager and refused to wear my school uniform mackintosh out on a rainy day. My mother looked at me over her glasses and said, "Pride feels no pain." She was right!
ReplyDeleteI think teens have to learn that one the hard way.
DeleteI imagine teens don't want to ruin their reputation by carrying an umbrellas.
ReplyDeleteAround here? Nah. No shame in an umbrella when there's nowhere dry to be.
DeleteThunder and lightning, serious stuff. It’s been stingy rain up here. Hopefully that’ll change come winter.
ReplyDeleteThat's the only rainstorm we've had lately. I hope it rains some more, though.
