Now that Quizly gives me daily quizzes, it's much easier for me to find quizzes for Fridays. It's also much easier to navigate than some of the other sites.
However, it also has a lot of ads. And pop ups. Which isn't so great.
This week, I'm linking to a quiz on portmanteau. In case you're unfamiliar, a portmanteau is when they combine two other words to give a word with a new meaning. For example, if you take web, as in world wide web, and combine it with log, as in that book that ship's captains write in, and smash them together, you get blog. Yeah, blog is a portmanteau.
Portmanteau Quiz
I did rather well on this one, 18 out of 20. I'm happy with that score.
Let me know how you did in the comments.
Congrats on the 18/20, that’s impressive. I’ll have to give the quiz a try and see if I can match your score though I might get tripped up by the trickier ones
ReplyDeleteSeems like you are pro in this quiz. Well done with that score, Liz!
ReplyDeleteThanks. I did much better on this one than the geography one I took a couple days later ;)
Delete19 out of 20 plus the bonus question. “You're a certified Portmanteau Pro! Not only did you crush this quiz, but you clearly have an ear for language, culture, and clever wordplay. Whether it's sitcoms or cronuts, you know where the words come from and how they collide. Seriously impressive stuff!” The one I didn’t know I didn’t even know it was such a thing.
ReplyDeleteGreat job.
Delete20 out of 20. Why do I know these things? :D
ReplyDeleteMy fave, although I probably didn't coin it, but like to think I did, is: Furrenemies. This term refers to my cats, who live together while barely tolerating each other. Ha.
It's funny the things we pick up.
DeleteI didn't take the quiz but I learned what a portmanteau is. As a blogger, that should be required knowledge!
ReplyDelete17/20
ReplyDeleteGreat job.
DeleteI managed only 14. Some of them are absolutely new for me.
ReplyDeleteAnother very US-centric quiz. I really should remember I have readers outside the US. (I know this. I do. But my quiz choices don't reflect this.)
DeleteNo worry. I too write a lot on India's problems. Natural.
DeleteHave you seen the quiz show 1%? Saw for first time last night, loved it. The questions are all puzzles.
ReplyDeleteI have not. What channel is it on?
DeleteI got 19/20. Didn't know the food based one. Didn't know there was such a thing as that mashup. Some are new slang, which I may hate, but have heard. I think the photos for some would have been dead giveaways for those not knowing the answers.
ReplyDeleteYeah, some of those photos did help. There are a couple slang terms that I dislike, too.
DeleteYay! 17 out of 20!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat job.
Delete18/20 Pretty happy as there were a few I'd not come across before
ReplyDeleteYeah, there were a couple I hadn't seen before either.
DeleteI love a good portmanteau and love making them up all the time. @samanthabwriter from
ReplyDeleteBalancing Act
Yes, they are fun, sometimes. Sometimes they are a bit much *side eyes ginormous*
Delete12/20, not so bad for my English knowledge ;)) I didn't know about phubbing for example, good portmanteau test!
ReplyDeleteHow fun! Portmanteaus are like linguistic magic tricks—smashing words together to create something entirely new (and often delightfully efficient). "Blog" is such a perfect example—it’s wild how seamlessly those blended words become part of everyday language.
ReplyDeleteThey can be.
DeleteThat is a new to me word and I am intrigued. I got a 19. Some of these were new to me words.
ReplyDeleteGood fun. I got 16/20. I am happy!
