Doppelgänger

What if? It's the basis of many stories. We ask. We ponder. We wonder.

On Tuesdays I throw one out there. What if? It may be speculative. It may stem from something I see. It may be something I pull from the news.

Make of it what you will. If a for instance is not specified, interpret that instance as you wish. And if the idea turns into a story, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements 😉

What if you encountered someone who looked just like you?

  1. Whenever I showed people my boot camp picture, they ALWAYS mis-identified me for another little fella with glasses.
Good thing I haven't met anyone else who looks like me, though. Because there'd be a lot of ugly dudes running around.

  2. My late cousin and I … she was a good deal older than I was and was estranged from my family when I was growing up. When I finally met her, she showed me photos of herself that I could have sworn were photos of me.

But I’ve never met a stranger who looks like me.

Though I do have a fairly common first name and my maiden name is also very common, , and I’ve met several people with the same first and last name as mine.

  3. I have a feeling it would shake me up. I've had a couple of occasions over the years where people thought I was someone else they knew so who knows, I may have a couple of doppelgangers out there.

  4. I expect both of us would stare and laugh and joke a bit. Ask who our families are, etc. I had a woman tell me we could be sisters. I am not good at seeing resemblances, but I took that as a compliment seeing as she was an attractive older woman! I'll be willing to bet my first name and maiden name are even more common than Songbird's! My maiden name is Smith! A long list of Smiths in high school, and a long list of Lisas in elementary.

  5. It would feel really weird. It might raise a lot of questions about who my family really is too.

  6. Probably it will lead to a lot of confusion.

  7. Hi Liz - I'd be shocked ... though when I visited my mother in various hospitals ... they all knew whose daughter I was. I'd feel for the other person!! Cheers Hilary

  8. I'd like to as I've been told many times there is someone living in this county who looks just like me.

  9. Looking like me is fine. Acting like me? I'd probably run! Lol.

  10. I'd wonder about the implications—could this double be from a parallel universe, or perhaps a long-lost twin separated at birth?

  11. I feel like I can recognize when someone shares facial features either with me or my mom. I find it intriguing. Once, way back in 1988, I picked up a magazine that a girl within its pages that was a more attractive version of me. She looked, to me, so much like me, but, again, better. That was a definite trip!

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
