Franklin

Covid update: Currently I feel like I have a very mild cold. I still test positive, but I'm confident that when school starts back up next week, I'll be fine (and back at work).

It's a good thing that school is starting back up soon as I am running out of TV shows to talk about. As I was lamenting that with the Olympics on, I wasn't watching anything new, I realized I had not talked about a show I saw a couple months ago. Franklin

Franklin, on Apple Plus, is about Benjamin Franklin in France during the War of Independence doing the diplomacy thing to secure supplies and such to help finance the war.

There are spies, double crosses, and diplomacy. And half of the show is in French. (This was not a show I could knit to. A character would start in English, switch to French, and then switch back into English in one speech.) The subtitles are in English, though, so I didn't have to rely on my high school French (which was a long time ago).

If you like history, you will probably enjoy this. I couldn't get over how anyone could dress like that day in and day out. Yikes.

Has anyone seen this show? Has anyone heard of it before? (When I stumbled across it was the first time I had heard of it.) Have you been watching anything other than the Olympics lately? What's your favorite sport to watch?

  1. I've heard of it but completely forgot it existed until I saw this post. My significant other has been studying French, so he'll appreciate the chance to practice his skills. My high-school French and I will appreciate the subtitles... :)

  2. I haven't seen it. I doubt my meager French will carry me through the first ten minutes. Take care. Get over that danged Covid.

  3. Glad you will be ready to go when school starts. I was watching Carnival Row on Amazon, but I got tired of the commercials.

  4. I have been watching the Olympics. I enjoyed watching gymnastics, swimming, volleyball, running, and any other sport that has Italian athletes in it. There is this thing going on in my house where we jokingly talk bad about each other country team when USA and Italy are competing. When Italy is not included i root for the little country that rarely get medals (just to go against my husband), but then when I hear the American anthem I get chills: I really like it! (I am naturalized American, but I still consider myself Italian. "It's in my blood" I say). Other than the Olympics I have been watching a Swedish show in Swedish language with English subtitles. I love it. It's called Bäckstrom on Acorn. Im used to reading subtitles because I still use subtitles even when I watch shows in English.

    1. I watch everything with subtitles nowadays. And English is the only language I know. It makes it easer to catch things, especially when they mumble.

  5. I haven't watched the Olympics in decades. This program sounds interesting. Thanks for sharing, and best wishes on your health.

    1. No Olympics? Well, if it's not your thing...

  6. Franklin sounds like something the Husband and I would enjoy. We’ve been watching TCM movies. The other day, Gordon McRae was the featured actor. We watched Oklahoma, Carousel, and The Desert Song. In my old age, I realize what a beautiful voice McRae had.

  7. Haven't seen that one.
Glad it feels like a mild cold. My wife and I had very mild colds earlier this year and after a couple days and feeling almost normal, I lost my sense of smell and we realized it might not have been a cold! (Too late to worry about it at that point anyway.)

  8. Hoping your recovery path continues smooth. I have Apple Plus (seems to be included with my cable plan, at least for now) but I hadn't heard of the show. We watch shows we've prerecorded on our DVR and usually don't watch TV at all during the day. The DVR can only record cable shows, not streaming, alas.

    1. Ah, but you don't need to record streaming as it's just there whenever you're ready for it.

Since you have Apple Plus, I've got two words for you: Ted Lasso. You'll thank me later.

    1. It's kinda niche, so you're not missing much (unless you're a history buff or a Franklin stan).

  10. I'm glad you are feeling better. It sucks and, I think, COVID is here to stay. I have not heard about this show but know about all the crap they had to wear...I would hate it. I've been watching the Olympics but, because I'm working, I missed my favs...the Equestrian, kayak in rapids. Canada used to be great in showing these even in prime time but I must have missed them.

    1. Do you have a place where they show all the sports? I know here that Peacock pretty much streams everything. I realized pretty quickly that I was not going to be able to see much, so I stuck with prime time coverage. It got to be too much too quickly to see all the sports.
