Tomorrow is the first day of school. I will have a class of seventh graders for the next month or so, and that got me thinking about me in the seventh grade:
I was not happy with this picture at the time. And eighth grade was worse:
Oh, I adored that shirt. It was fabulous. But my hair... Sigh.
Why did I pull these out? I'm debating whether or not I should share these with the incoming seventh graders.
I've got a couple days to decide. Funny how they don't look as awful as they seemed to me at the time.
Looking at the hair now, sure... but ALL the hair was like that! Even on adults. You were up with the times in middle school. You look much older in the 8th grade picture compared to 7th. If you can take the laughter, go ahead and share! They'll think their own look terrible in a few decades!
ReplyDeleteAnd my mother insisted (to the stylist, when she took me for haircuts) that I liked my hair short and layered. Ah, when I was finally able to speak up and tell the stylist what I really liked...
DeleteYou're one up on me; I have no idea where any of my class pictures are. But I wince to see professional photos taken of me, my son and husband because - the early 90's and those glasses! Ugh, those glasses! If I were you, would I show my class those pictures - I vote yes, if you are comfortable with it. Yes, they are dated - just as their 7th grade pictures will be in another 30 or 40 years.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of glasses, you should see my 9th grade photo. '80s glasses for the win. A truly dated picture. The irony is, that was the year I got contact lenses. (I wore glasses in 7th and 8th grades, but not in my school pictures.)
DeleteYou had very tall hair.
ReplyDeleteYeah I think your students will enjoy the photo.
ReplyDeleteI think they will, too.
DeleteI recall showing my sons photo of me when I was about 18. They thought I was born heavy and had grey hair. Go figure.
ReplyDeleteYou look lovely. Of course we wore hair “big” ' back then, so we all look “different” compared to now. I commend you for the courage to share your photos: I can’t stand to see me in photos.
ReplyDeleteOh, I hated that hair at the time. Once I learned the trick of "long layers", I liked my hair so much more. (I have very thick hair. Layers are a necessity.)
DeleteIt's amazing how our perspective changes over time! Sharing these could be a great way to connect with your students and show them that we all have those awkward phases.
ReplyDeleteThat's the thought, I think.
DeleteYour photos are great! I like the second one, a more natural smile ;) Your students will appreciate the before/after and will be able to project themselves into the future. Some apps let you age yourself, it's fun ;)
ReplyDeleteCharming.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
DeleteThat was the style back then. Kids might get a kick out of them.
ReplyDeleteIt was, but I didn't do it quite right. Mostly because I hated hair spray and refused to spend the time styling my hair the way everyone else did. (I still won't do it.)
