Playing Tourist

It's full on summer (at least here in the northern hemisphere), and summer is known for turning people into tourists.

Last week, my roommates decided that we needed to go out to dinner an iconic place, Mrs. Knott's Chicken Dinner Restaurant. It's a place with a lot of history, and it's definitely something you'd want to do if you were a visitor to my area.

I had never been before, even though I knew about it. And that leads to today's random question.

What is something that your hometown is known for, but it's something you've never done (or a place you've never visited)?

  1. My town actually used to have some big PGA golf tournament every year (stopped after the pandemic). I was always beyond disinterested in it, and only knew it was happening because of the increase of buses going by.

  2. That's quite a bit of history behind Knott's. I have been to most of the places that the city of Bangalore is known for. But there are many iconic and historic places in this state (Karnataka) that I haven't been to. Two examples: Jog Falls (known for its scenic deep water plunge), and the town of Badami, famous for its beautiful cave temples dating back to around 600 AD that were cut out of sandstone rocks and which surrounds a lake.

  3. haha....well, my town is known for country music, and I have done the Hall of Fame, and a lot of places that reflect the county music asspect. But I have to admit, in the last ten yrs there has been so much growth that there are things I have not seen.

    1. Yes, it is. The Hall of Fame sounds interesting.

  4. We live in a small, rural town and after almost 30 years, I think we've done it all. Except visit the Mt. Olive Pickle Factory, but not sure that qualifies as a destination. (Although we have been to the Mt. Olive Pickle Festival many times.)

  5. My hometown? Well, if you consider my "hometown" as the city where I was born and grew up as vs. where I've lived for over 35 years now, that would be New York City. There must be several iconic places I never visited, because city residents don't necessarily do the things tourists to the city do.

    1. By "hometown", I meant the town you currently call home, but I'm not particular as to how anyone interprets the question.

  6. That is SO TRUE. I live in Virginia Beach and while, yes, I've been to the beach, I've never visited the Cape Henry Lighthouse. Related (sort of), I took a tour of Richmond, Virginia, a couple months ago. Even though I've been in this area for over forty years, I learned things about Virginia's capital that I never knew. Like, it's way more than the Civil War. Fascinating.

    1. It's fascinating what you can learn by taking the touristy route in your town. I went on a guided tour of Disneyland (it was an elementary school field trip) and some of the things the tour guide told us, like how Main Street was constructed, was stuff that I wouldn't have known just by visiting as a normal local.

  7. There are many cave temples in my hometown that I have not visited.

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
