Sometimes When We Touch

Some days I scroll through the various streaming services I subscribe to, just looking. If something looks even slightly interesting, I'll add it to "my list".

Other days, I'll open my lists just to see if there's something that catches my eye to watch. Last week, I perused my list on Paramount Plus, and my mood matched Sometimes When We Touch

This is a three part show about soft rock. Remember soft rock? (Many of my regular readers are of the right age to remember the '70s.) I certainly do.

They interview various artists from that era. They show clips from shows like The Captain and Tennille and Donny & Marie, and I remember those shows. I liked those shows. Now, I can't recall if I was the one who insisted on those shows or if I watched what my parents put on the TV, but I know I watched them. (I have no idea if I would watch those shows today without cringing, but child me loved them.)

The show talks about the music and how the perception of the music has evolved over the last fifty years. Apparently, it's enjoying a resurgence. Did you know that yacht rock is a thing? Apparently, if you want these songs, just look for the yacht rock stations on satellite radio or wherever you stream.

Here's a trailer:

What's your favorite soft rock song? I think I have to go with something from Chicago. "You're the Inspiration." (Ask me tomorrow, and I'll probably pick something else.)

  1. Yacht rock is actually a type of music? Good grief. I've learned something today. That's for sure.

  2. Alas, I missed the cutoff for the soft rock generation as I was born in the 82. I listened my mom's John Denver and Elvis collection, but once I got to choose my own music, it was New Kids on the Block followed by the surge of 90s pop and alternative.

    1. Yeah, you grew up when soft rock was reviled.

  3. I did not know that Yacht Rock was a thing. Interesting.

I think my favorite soft rock (provided it actually counts as soft rock...it may not) song is Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler.

  4. I had to look up some lists of what artists were considered "soft rock." It makes me think of the later '70s stuff I didn't care for, but I see some of my favorites are listed. Cat Stevens, Elton John, Chicago. I was partial, and still am to Jackson Browne. Not on the Wikipedia list, but the Eagles are, so I guess he was too. Not what we called "soft rock" then though. That was like Air Supply, Hall and Oates, later '70s. Another Wikipedia list does have Jackson Browne's The Pretender, so I'll go with that as a favorite. I did watch those televisions shows, even if not being a fan of the music they sang! It was what was on television.

    1. It ran the gamut, definitely. It's like with anything, it started off good, but then things went too far. That's the later '70s. Although, some early '80s stuff wasn't too bad either.

  5. We watched those variety shows. :) My mom and I also watched afternoon soap operas. There's a Japanese restaurant that airs them on a television and it's surreal seeing some of the same actors from decades ago. I can't imagine watching anything like that now. lol Be well!

  6. Hmmm...probably something by Air Supply would have to be in my top 3 songs. I was a huge fan of REO Speedwagon as a kid. 'Heard it from a Friend' was my jam.

    1. I think we all did. If you were of that age at that time. I even had a Marie doll. (I remember cutting off its hair...)

  10. We have satellite radio but my husband stays far away from the station (it isn't on all summer and I'm not sure it's on yet) playing yacht rock. My favorite? Right this moment it would be Christopher Cross and Sailing although it's late, late 70's.

  11. Yacht rock ? Never heard the term. I guess Bryan Adams would be close to soft rock.

  15. I recall the Carpenters. My father had a crush on Claudine Longet. We were not allowed to listen to music, being raised in a strict religion, or dance. But he had his Claudine Longet LP's. I like rock, but not so much soft rock. I sort of liked John Denver but his voice wasn't the best.
