We Didn't Start the Fire

So, you know the Billy Joel song, "We Didn't Start the Fire"? That came out 30-ish years ago. So, Fall Out Boy thought it was time for an update:

Just in case you missed this. (I'm kinda obsessed with this new version.)

Anyway, now the challenge has been issued. In 30-ish years, someone else has to do an update...

(Billy Joel was asked what he thought of the cover/update. He doesn't seem too upset over it.)

  1. I've heard only bad things about that cover, even from Fallout Boy's fans!

  2. Billy Joel is winner and still champion, in my thinking.

  3. I am a big Fallout Boy fan, At first I didn't like the idea of an update, but I guess it will do. Creating a new song the does a nod to the old would have been better.

    1. Yeah, I suppose they could have done that.

  4. Of course, at my age (66 next month) I like Billy Joel's best! I do see how the events and people mentioned in it aged, and a lot of even Joel fans wouldn't relate, so an update isn't unexpected. Some of his lyrics were still things I needed to look up! Still... covers aren't needed for everything! I usually dislike them. I don't remember what the lesson was, but when my oldest was in middle school (I think) home school, he used some of the lyrics as the basis of a history lesson.

    1. Oh, there's nothing wrong with Billy Joel's. I was just happy to see a version with more recent events.

  5. Billy Joel’s lyrics are in chronological order. There is meter and rhyme. It’s a masterpiece.

Fallout Boy’s version …they name all the significant events of their generation, but their lyrics aren’t poetry. Far from it. It’s ok, but it’s not nearly as good as the original. A nice piece of history and nostalgia, but nothing fantastic.

    1. Yeah, the chronological bit is what annoys me about the cover. Perhaps the next person to make a stab at it will do better.

  6. I like the remake, and it's not my favorite Billy Joel song, anyway. Thank you for sharing.
