Virtually Real

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements.
😉

What if all of this (*gestures to the world at large*) is just a simulation? (No, really, physicists think it might be.)

  1. I wouldn't be surprised. It definitely is more than we currently know.

    1. There may be a reason The Matrix resonated with so many.

  3. Then I'd like to file a bug report. It is horribly broken.

  4. There's a book on the best seller list right now, Sea of Tranquility, by Emily St. John Mandel, that explores that very topic. I enjoyed the first Matrix movie very much. As a long time SF reader, it wouldn't surprise me at all. I just hope that the creators of our universe simulation don't decide to pull the plug on us.

    1. What would happen if they did pull the plug? Would we cease to be? Or would we exist someplace else?

  5. I don't think it would matter one way or the other. We still have the lives we are living to live.

  6. I wish they would change the scene totally.

  7. Sometimes I think maybe we're small organisms, teensy ones, living in a huge body. We can't see it because we're way too small. The earth itself (and universe as we see it from our size perspective and location) could be a particle floating in the fluids of a huge body. It's all in the scale and perspective.

  8. The divide between the simulated and the real anyway looks quite blurred often.

  9. What? It’s not someone’s dream were traipsing through?

  10. People keep trying to explain existence, thinking they have done it. New technology seems to drive new ideas of existence always trying to look back in time for their answers, only coming up with new questions. It’s all gobbled gook, did you know you can buy gobbled gook on the web? Google it.

    1. I don't think we'll ever figure it out. I don't know if I really want to.

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
