A Waiting Room

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements.
😉

What if Earth is a "waiting room" for us while we await our turn?

  1. Our turn for what? That’s the real question.

    1. Ah, you caught me. I was being non-specific on purpose ;)

  2. I was in a waiting room today and I can see some similarities. You wonder why you haven't been called when you got there first, you notice all the old people who have time to wait in the middle of the day, and when you do get called the appointment is never as satisfying as the price you paid for entry.

  3. That might be. Where God sends us or has a waiting room for mankind, that will be just fine. "Defending your life" with Albert Brooks heads that way.

  4. Like what Susan said! We are here waiting for an awesome afterlife.

  5. Well, that sucks and why isn't Putin shoved to the front of the line?? I hope I am waiting for a long time before I enter that door.

  6. I think there is too much good (and sadly on the other side too much bad!) in the world for this to be a waiting room. A waiting room would be much more boring with a lot less good moments!

Hope that your week is going well! Another stormy day here.

    1. That poses an interesting question, too. What if waiting rooms were more interesting? I mean, why not, right?

  7. We may as well have fun while we’re waiting. Where is that Highlight Magazine?

  8. Maybe not a waiting room, but a purgatory for aliens? I've had thoughts along those lines. How you live your Earthly life determines where you go next. (Either that, or I read too much SF.)

  9. Well, being my late mother-in-law was a member of a religion that teaches that's pretty much what we're doing here (a "test"), I'll pass on what I think!

  10. A waiting room with a very, very long wait time. That's why we get to live out a whole life, however long or short. AND we don't even know what we're waiting for.

    Ugh. Nightmare stuff.

  11. I am of the opinion the world is a jungle and we are animals. We live on an incredibly thin layer of dirt, atop a spinning sphere in a vast universe that lies within other universes. We are teensy weensy, and unimportant in the vastness of time and space. If the earth is a waiting room, its probably aliens who would think that because they want the carbon fuel from bodies once there's enough to come harvest. What do I know. Ha, nothing.

  12. Then I need a big supply of crafts, books and the internet cause I have been waiting a long time and I rather not have the challenges I have had through my life and/or waiting period.

  13. It depends on what you are waiting for and if you know what you are waiting for and it also depends on your place in the line, if there is a line. Also it depends is it before or after when it's your time in the line and of course who is in charge of the line.

    1. All very good questions. I did leave those unspecified, so you get to pick ;)

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
