Party Trap

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements.
😉

What if you found yourself at a party that you couldn't escape? (Think days, not hours.)

  1. I’d make the best of it and escape at the first opportunity.

  2. I'd as the host who invited me, "What the H*** is going on?" If I couldn't leave, maybe I'd get a release date! If there was plenty of food and drink, and a place to sleep, plus good company (not the host who tricked me, and hopefully not a bunch of yellers trying to get out), then stay. Or, lock myself in a room and wait it out. Does my phone work? Call for help. I supposed this happened to a lot of people during the worst of the pandemic, having to quarantine with others.

    1. I did not specify if the phone works. But if you can't escape, it probably doesn't.

  4. Reminds me of the episode of the Magicians, where Josh is trapped in a party. He was reluctant to escape until the rest of the group rescued him. One of my favorite episodes.

    1. Yup, that's what came to mind when I came up with the question.

    2. That was such a great show except for the last season. The writers felt Quintin's story was over, but he was the glue that held the cast together. The last season had it's moments, but was not as good as the rest.

    3. I haven't gotten that far yet. I kind of put the whole thing on hold after season... I think I finished season 3? I'd have to look. It's been months. I keep meaning to get back to it.

    2. Oh, no! It's a classic. :D This scenario would be a nightmare, for sure. I'm reminded of this great stand-up routine.

    3. The song gives me the creeps. My mother loves it. My father agrees with me :)

  6. Well, I'd make the best of it. Find a place to sleep. Have bites to eat, dance and drink but would look for ways out plus ask the host WTF??

    1. You all pose an excellent question: what about the host?

  7. Ha, I thought of the Hotel California, too. "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave!" has become a favorite saying of mine. (Like the job I retired from but I'm still there, part time, nearly two years later.) Oh, wait, I need to comment on your question. I would try to wake myself up in any way I could, because obviously I'm trapped in a bad dream. Or am I?

    1. No requirement to answer the question. It's something to ponder and let it take you where it will.

  8. I'd settle in, claim space for myself, exclude all others from that space, maybe mark it off with couches. Next, claim food, whatever I wanted that they had and hide it. Next, I'd search their house for books and movies and the remotes and claim those. I would hope this would be a luxury house, with amenities, like a really nice pool, exercise equipment....and when I finally could leave the house, I'd make like my grandma at Kings Table---stuff my pockets, purse, daypack, clothes, with all the good stuff I could find.

  9. Hopefully, I will begin to learn to enjoy what I can't avoid!

  10. I like get togethers, small parties but I am not a big one on a house full of partiers, being loud and drinking so if it is one of those parties I would lose my PATIENCE (throw back from your last post)....haha....I guess I would do what I tend to be the best at, sit, and watch people, then tilt my head back and nap...

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
