Java Free

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements.
😉

What if there was no coffee?

Yes, I'm being deliberately vague. Take the question as general or as specific as you choose.

  1. Who cares. I am in the minority since I don’t drink coffee.

  2. I like coffee but I’m not addicted. I’d miss it, but I could find other beverages

    1. I rather think you're in the minority, but we'll see.

  3. I had to stop drinking any kind of coffee several months ago. A mystery bladder problem that caused me major discomfort for months last year was diagnosed as a sensitivity to caffeine and a couple of other things including the acid in all coffee. I drink a non caffeine coffee substitute now called Cafix, and it doesn't taste like coffee but gives me similar satisfaction (except for the caffeine part, of course.)

    1. Getting off caffeine is good, in my opinion. I've been off it since the mid-'80s.

  4. I stopped drinking coffee because the doctor said the caffeine was affecting my ear. I think it is a combination of things, but it has helped. If there were no coffee. We would be enjoying a some other over priced mass-marketed stimulating morning drink. Think how much better teas would be :).

  5. I could get by. These days I drink coffee from organic or small batches of handcrafted coffee beans, otherwise I’m itchy all over with a gassy tummy. Now there’s a sad character for you.

  7. If I went to the kitchen and my husband was already watching TV, but our "Mr. Coffee" wasn't steaming away, I'd ask, "Did you forget something

    1. Well, I did say make it as general or specific as you wished.

  8. If there wasn't any, ever, then I wouldn't know any better. A year ago I wouldn't have cared. Somehow I've become used to iced mochas and really feel the lack of them if I don't get one. I guess I really out to do something about that! Mostly I get sugar-free, but they only come in vanilla, but at least that's something.

    1. Yeah, if we didn't know any better, we'd never know any better. But once you're used to something...

  9. I can't stand the stuff so I'd be all right with it. However, some of my co-workers might take hostages at that point.

  11. I would have a serious case of caffeine withdrawal in the morning. Though I have switched to decaf the rest of the day. I don't want to imagine such a world.

  12. Then life would not be worth living.

  13. That would be sad... I love a particular version of coffee which is called 'filter coffee' here. I won't be able to have that then!

  14. I drink a cup in the morning but I don't particularly like it. I think if there was no coffee, I'd be just fine. In fact, I think I'll try it out by quitting for a few weeks. But if there was no coffee, say it was never propagated on earth or here to begin with, what would everyone drink and think they were artifically more energetic? Maybe they'd end up harvesting adrenalin glands from the deceased (organ donars), to create a peppy drink. Maybe the human race would sleep more and get less done and not even be motivated to go to war.....

    1. I don't know if caffeine is strictly necessary. (I've been off it for decades.) But some do seem to need it.

    2. Strayer has a way of thinking I must admire. Her words evoke several science fiction ideas I've read. lol By the way, I'm no coffee fan, either.

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
