Windfall?

What if? It's the basis of many stories. We ask. We ponder. We wonder.

On Tuesdays I throw one out there. What if? It may be speculative. It may stem from something I see. It may be something I pull from the news.

Make of it what you will. If a for instance is not specified, interpret that instance as you wish. And if the idea turns into a story, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements 😉

I saw this:

And I thought it would make a good question. So...

What if you found that $10 million was mistakenly deposited into your bank account due to a computer glitch?

  1. Unfortunately, I don't think it would be legal to spend it, and you'd have the IRS after you anyway.

  2. That would be a wild mistake. I would, of course, alert the bank and be done with it (sadly).

  3. I would not touch it. Although, if it remained there for a while, I would use it as leverage to invest my savings into something with greater returns.

    1. I knew there had to be an advantage somewhere.

  4. I'd phone them as soon as I noticed. Someone would be missing it, so they'd probably already have contacted the bank!

  5. I would report it to the bank.

  6. No way to get by that one, as you'd end up paying taxes on it, if you spent it, then you'd have to pay it back, when the mistake was found. But boy, in the meantime.......there could be a whole lot of vacationing and travel and clothes/shoes bought....

    1. I mean, it's the bank's mistake, not like you went looking for it or anything...

  7. Oh they would find the error and I would be screwed so I would contact them and tell them to fix it.

  8. Well, I am an honest person but....I think I would just leave it there till they came and asked me where it was. Personally, I would not mind pocketing it, but that is not my style.

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
