What if? It's the basis of many stories. We ask. We ponder. We wonder.
On Tuesdays I throw one out there. What if? It may be speculative. It may stem from something I see. It may be something I pull from the news.
Make of it what you will. If a for instance is not specified, interpret that instance as you wish. And if the idea turns into a story, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements 😉
What if you could gain magical powers, but only if you never lied again? (Are lies of omission lies? I'll leave that as unspecified.)
That would work. I don't lie. I mean, not knowingly. I believe a lie of omission is a lie, if someone directly asks something and you hedge answering, or somehow twist the answer. I can't stand when someone says, "Well, you didn't say you were..." only to be told, "I didn't say I wasn't." That makes for poor relationships! I'm not sure I'd want magical powers though.
ReplyDeleteI didn't specify what kind of magical powers, either.
DeleteDepends on if the magical powers were worth the effort. Of course, what is the definition of lying here? (insert a chuckle or two).
ReplyDeleteI didn't specify. So, whatever magical powers you wish.

ReplyDeleteI don't like to lie but sometimes I do lie, to uncomplicate complicated things or save someone some terrible news, smoothing over I call it. But an outright lie, that fills me with guilt and I feel I'll be caught in it. I think its better to bite the bullet in the moment to tell the truth rather than try to remember all the complicated lies manufactured over something.
ReplyDeleteI basically stole this question from a book I read ages ago. The old wizard didn't take the deal just because of what you said--sometimes it's better to lie to uncomplicate complicated things. He did all right in the end.
