What if? It's the basis of many stories. We ask. We ponder. We wonder.
On Tuesdays I throw one out there. What if? It may be speculative. It may stem from something I see. It may be something I pull from the news.
Make of it what you will. If a for instance is not specified, interpret that instance as you wish. And if the idea turns into a story, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements 😉
What if you could save the world, but you had to sacrifice yourself to do it? (If you don't "save the world", there may not be a world to remain on. That's the only thing I'll specify.)
Lose lose. I preserve myself and I lose the world. I preserve the world but have to sacrifice myself.
ReplyDeleteIf my daughters are part of the world, the choice is easy. I just hope they’ll remember me and honor their mother’s sacrifice.
I can't make all the questions easy ;)
DeleteI agree with what songbird's crazy world wrote. Our motivation may be personal, to save our children, but it saves the world as well.
ReplyDeleteHave you ever read The Cabin at the End of the World? It's one of the best books I've ever read, and your question rather ties into it's premise. It's listed as "horror," but it's much more a suspense. BUT... it's bloody. Scary in that it's possible the events could happen, what with today's conspiracy nuts.
I don't think I'll ever come up with a truly original "what if?" I don't think I can read horror (I definitely can't watch it), so I'll take your word that they answered the question sufficiently :)
DeleteI would sacrifice myself.
ReplyDeleteI'd die either way so, so long ad I can take the Donald and his numbers with me, I might do this
ReplyDeleteAh, something I did not specify...
DeleteSacrifying wouldn't be so bad... Have a great week :D
ReplyDeleteWhat a decision! Given the choices, self sacrifice would have to be the answer. I would hope my sacrifice had the desired effect but if it didn't then I wouldn't want to live in that world (for however long), anyway.
ReplyDeleteMy mind kind of went to a dark place last week...
DeleteI'd do it. If I die, I go to a better place anyway.
ReplyDeleteThat seems to be the popular opinion.
DeleteI have a daughter so it would be an easy choice to sacrifice myself for her.
ReplyDeleteThey topic of many good stories and more than one Buffy The Vampire Slayer episode. "She saved the world, a lot." The tougher question is, if you had to choose saving the world or escaping the destruction, like Author Dent in the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, what would you do.
ReplyDeleteAuthor Dent's adventures did look appealing.
Yes, that is a different question. Perhaps another week.
DeleteI’m not that altruistic anymore. There are other ways to “save” the world without dying, I’m sure.
ReplyDeleteSacrifice or no, I would be dead anyway!
