Old Projects

Last week I blogged about making a color choice for the Exasperation Hat (and you all gave me some good color suggestions. Thank you).

Turns out, I wasn't feeling the hat. Instead of pulling out the black (or the olive green) and starting the beanie, I pulled out an old project.

I started this back in *checks Ravelry* October of 2013. Which means I've had it on the needles longer than my six-year afghan. [I'd show pictures of the afghan or link to a blog post, but it predates the blog, and it's kind of buried in the closet at the moment, so getting it out for a picture would be awkward (read: not in the mood to bother today).]

Ultimately, it's going to be a sweater. A cardigan. It's been a bit of a challenge. I had issues with the gauge swatch. Four years later, I again had issues with the pattern. And then there's the issue of me setting the thing down for a year or more at a time when I work on other projects.

It's a complicated stitch pattern (that took me years to finally get the hang of--yet, I still make mistakes). It's also a very long repeat. Plus, each row is *goes and counts* 342 stitches long.

So, perhaps you won't be surprised to learn that I've only worked eight rows this week. It grows, but slowly.

Will I finish it this time? Not likely. Will I finish it ever? I intend to.

The other thing I did this past week was to cut out some more fabric for masks. Because I'm getting bored with the ones I have. (Not that I go anywhere. Well, I do go to the store.) And they're kind of fun to make.

Adding the knitting along the sides for the ear elastics is the fun part of it. I'll get to that. Eventually.

And I'll eventually get to the Exasperation Beanie. Probably.

How many masks do you own?

  1. That sweater does look complicated, and gorgeous! I hope we get to see you model the completed garment. :) As for masks, I have two, both disposable, one in each of our sedans. Stay safe and sane!

    1. At the rate I'm going, it'll be another decade before it's complete.

  2. Love the project you are working on. I only use 3 ply disposable masks. Right now I have 3 boxes with 50 masks each - white, black, and tie-dye.

  3. Some of my family is getting back into knitting. I'm surprised at the different knitting patterns. Yours sounds complicated if it took you years to master.

  4. Beautiful pattern, but my, your yarn is very thin! Eight rows sounds good.

  5. I have a feeling masks are going to to be the big item for the next few years.

  6. That's cool you haven't given up on your projects, Liz. That's a cool color for your cardigan.
I think we have a dozen masks, and that's because I don't want to wash them right away. The first ones have shrunk from having been washed too often. I've been looking for a new pattern that keeps our sunglasses from fogging up.

  7. Yeah, it's easier to have several so that you don't have to wash them every day.

  8. I won't admit how long I've had a couple of my "in progress, ha ha ha" projects, but one, I think, is around 20 years in progress. I think the person I was making it for is grown now. Maybe for his grandkids...so you are doing good. How many masks? Maybe 10, of which I wear the same 3 or 4 over and over again. A couple (given to me) I deem too thin but maybe I'll wear them together. And I'm barely getting out to do anything once every two weeks like shop, so it isn't like I need masks that badly.

    1. Yeah, I don't need them too often, either, but I'm bored of mine.

    1. It's more impressive if I actually finish the thing.

  10. I want a mask that doubles as a beanie.

  11. I love the cardi. It will be gorgeous when you finish. And we have 2 boxes of disposable masks (so 100) just in case we need them. And I have a bag of fabric and elastic with 2 or 3 different patterns ready to go, again just in case. But I have been so lucky because where I live hasn't needed masks at any point yet. Some parts of Oz has at times, but we are really safe here *touchwood*

  12. I will look forward to seeing that sweater because it is hard for me to imagine it but I know you will get it done.masks are the in thing for obvious reasons and I bet some will use it no matter what from now on.

    1. It's not photographed well to visualize. It'll make more sense if I ever get it finished.

I appreciate your comments.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
