Religious Law

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements. ðŸ˜‰

What if the U.S. became a theocracy?

  1. If that happened...I'd be packing my bags. My people don't do very well living in theocracies.

  2. I had to look it up! But I don't know that it would be more horrible than having Trump as President!

    1. That's what some of his followers are trying to do.

  3. We're at least halfway there already and it's awful.

  4. I think it would cause anarchy. I'd be against it. One of the best freedoms we have is choosing whether we believe in something or some God or whether we don't. To take that right away would ruin what I think the founding fathers wanted for this country.

  6. You knew I would say "Science fiction already covered that." Back in 1940 Robert Heinlein wrote a story called If This Goes on about a theocracy that has taken control of the United States. I read it as a teenager and it is not an easy read, but some of it (I understand parts have not aged well) introduced me to dystopian literature.

    1. I'm not surprised. I mean, that's the premise of The Handmaiden's Tale.

  7. Seeing theocracy in Islamic countries is a full on example. Stoning a woman to death for going out without a male relative, stoning a woman who has been raped, stoning...

We have many problems in America, but being stoned by real stones is not one of them.

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
