They were way too happy to see me. And that really makes me nervous.
Friday. Sixth period. US history. This was the class that I had before spring break.
One of the students was saying how she had wished for a sub, and not just any sub but me in particular. But, she knew that Mr. B was on campus. And I was elsewhere.
But, the teacher I was covering had sixth period prep. And, as I may have mentioned before, this year it's been more likely than not that I pick up an extra period (and an extra period's pay) rather than getting the time off.
I have no idea why, but Mr. B had to leave early. So, guess who was asked to cover it?
When students are that happy to see me, I wonder what it was that I let them get away with. Because why would students like a sub? There's something wrong with this picture.
However, this was the good class. They were generally silent. Of the whole day, they were the best behaved group. So, again, whatever did I let them get away with?
I gave them the assignment. And then I held my breath. Were they going to take a "free" day?
Nope, they worked silently again. For the whole period. (And we were on block schedule for state testing, so the period was two hours long.)
I guess it will remain a mystery, as I didn't see them doing anything they shouldn't've.

Probably because somewhere along the way they got the "sub from hell" who made their lives difficult one way or another. Its nice that they actually hoped it was you (though bit creepy the girl knew you were on campus that day) and that they didn't act out but actually got their work done, for a 6th period on a Friday. That is a miracle!

It's good to be wanted, though, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteIt sort of is, but I don't trust it.
DeleteI never liked getting assigned to another class when I was supposed to be covering a teacher's prep period (which, as you know, is for subs a break). But, you get paid extra when you are? That'd be sweet. I'd somehow get over being annoyed if that was the case.
ReplyDeleteMaybe they just really don't like the teacher. At least one of the students likes you better than him.
ReplyDeleteJust accept it! Maybe they have had some mean subs.
ReplyDeleteIt's a miracle! Don't question it, lol. (Written by a non-teacher).
ReplyDeleteYeah, I just wonder where I messed up.
DeleteMy school had an overly strict study hall monitor. The slightest sound or looking up from your work put him into lecture mode about our laziness and lack of dedication.
ReplyDeleteGetting a sub meant we wouldn't be yelled at for an hour.
Ah. I could see why you'd like a sub in that situation.
DeleteHi Liz - well that's great ... they have respect for you - makes absolute sense ... as Alex says 'just go with it' ... cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteMaybe they like that you don't get the "I am your superior, bow down to me." type complex. *shrug*
ReplyDeleteMaybe. I never got that vibe from their teacher, but I could be wrong.
DeleteWhat a nice compliment. Enjoy it and don't try to analyze the reasons. ~nods~ Take care!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I don't do that.
DeleteMaybe you are nicer than the other subs. Especially since it's a "good" class. OR... Maybe Mr. B. had done something that bugged them. Gave extra homework or a pop quiz all week or yelled at one of the kids in front of the class. Maybe you are the "break", the breath of fresh air.
ReplyDeleteGood for you!
See, "nicer" bothers me, too. Am I not being strict enough? Am I letting them get away with stuff? That's where my brain goes.
DeleteI agree with Red. You are just a good teacher who is fair and doesn't bug them like Mr. B. ;)
ReplyDeleteNope, not a good teacher. I'm comfortable with that.
DeleteIt's like any teachers - they like some and don't like others. My kids are the same, there are subs they like and teaches they like and I've heard them sometimes hope they get the sub again.
