Last Thursday I went full evil. It kind of just happened. I'm rather ashamed, but here I am, putting it on blast on my blog.
First, I served papers on a sweet old lady.
I have mentioned the deluge that happened in my bedroom. Yes, there is still a hole in my ceiling. Getting the neighbors to pay for the damage, well, isn't happening. We've had to take them to court. The sweet old lady is still the owner of record. (She's moved to an assisted living facility.) Her daughter, well, if her daughter had taken care of business, we wouldn't be going to court.
Shortly thereafter, I called 911 on a black man.
I don't know if you've been aware of all the "Beckys" calling 911 on people of color who were minding their own business. It's a thing.
However, this man was lying in the street, twitching. It was a busy street. Traffic... Well, it was 6-ish.
And while he was in the crosswalk, he was far enough out in the street that he could have been hit. I don't know that he was having a seizure, but it sure looked like it.
On the bright side, 911 seemed to be aware of the issue, so I wasn't the first to call. Once the first responders arrived, we got out of the way, so I don't know how this all resolved.
It was once I got home that I realized how evil I had gotten. I need to be way more careful in the future.

I think you were helpful with the 911 call and justice is being served with the papers you had to serve. Sorry it was for the sweet lady, but this has been going on for so long and if they aren't going to do something on their own, time to get the courts involved. Hope it does get resolve to your satisfaction soon.

ReplyDeleteAs for serving suit on the little old lady...Her daughter didn't leave you with any choice, unless you want to live with a hole in the ceiling indefinitely. You know what I do for a living, I've had to serve papers on people many times. sometimes I'm giddy with joy -- they really deserve the aggravation -- and sometimes I feel bad that I have to take this kind of action.
I hope your ceiling gets fixed soon.

DeleteWELL...SHAME ON YOU! haha...kidding, I am just glad I am not the only one that gets like that. I take a lot before I do but there comes a time that you just have to stand up for you. As for the old lady, that is terrible about the daughter not doing what she KNOWS in her heart she needs to take care of. Sometimes, people suck. Anyway, glad you called for the man in the street. No telling what is going on but you did good. Yes, I told the insurance company that they might not want to be given this companys name out for repairs. I am over them and the repair company. I could have gotten a rental over two weeks ago but my car was drivable. I rather keep driving it but with the bumper coming off and this crap dragging on I decided to let the insurance company cover the cost. Like you, I went off the other day. I am tired of messing with stupid folk.
ReplyDeleteI just don't get how he said it was totalled only after telling you you could drive it. It sounds like he has no idea what he's doing.
DeleteIt seems to me that you are just responding to bad things that are happening around you. Often that can make us feel like the bad guy, but you are doing a great job making tough calls.

DeleteThe guy did need medical help. Can you just get paramedics without getting police where you live? I know in some places you can't. Sometimes dispatchers just hear the word "black" and send out a SWAT team. It's good to double-check your behavior.

Re the man who may have been having a seizure - not evil. But the sweet old lady - it's more a shame on our system that would make you have to resort to an action like that when this woman's daughter couldn't, as you said, take care of business. This situation has been dragging on for months. I also thought at first it was something evil you did in the classroom. You would never do anything evil there.....would you?

ReplyDeleteAnd I hope that man is okay. That had to be a scary sight. As for going off on stupid people, I got myself all worked up last Friday expecting we were being scammed by the lawn mower repair shop. Took three times longer than estimated, but turned out to be cheaper than we hoped and they did a decent job. Hurray! I was able to mow with our well built beast again yesterday instead of the neighbor's borrowed dinosaur of a machine. Best wishes!

ReplyDeleteThe owners (dementia or not) still own the property and must take care of it. My daughter had a similar problem, but with rats. Healthy dept. on that one.
Last I heard were sirens. It was a busy street, so there was no good place to stop, but a cop had arrived, there was a guy on the corner, and I could hear the ambulance sirens, so I assume he was cared for.

ReplyDeleteHaving to take things to the court isn't always a pleasant option. But I am sure this was your last option. I hope it gets resolved soon. The good old adage is: "You can't choose your neighbors!"
Regarding calling 911, well, I thought you did the correct thing. He needed assistance, right? Hope he gets better.

DeleteYou did the right thing to call 911 and glad to hear others called as well. I hope the man is ok. You are not evil! This water damage happened months ago and you gave the daughter every possible way to take care of the issue. She may have her hands full but, if she is the POA for her mom then she must take care of all issues which includes the property. There will be understanding regarding the elderly lady who is in long term care but the law will go to the daughter who just didn't want to deal with the issues. She might very well be taking advantage of her mom and the assets...I have seen this more than I care to.
