Walking the Dog

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements.
😉

What if there was an electronic-style leash that kept the dog connected to you but wasn't tethered to you (so the dog could go around a tree without taking you with him)?

  1. I think I had that with Dakota. He was always with me. If I was in the kitchen cooking he was there, if I walked to bedroom he followed, if I went the bathroom, he was there. When I first got him I told my mom that he followed me so close that if he was a tall dog, and I bent over, he would go up my rear!! lol

    1. Of course, in the house that's totally not necessary ;)

  2. Nah. I'd worry it would short out somehow and zap the dog! Or, turn off and the dog would catch on and run off! I walk Mickey to the park on a regular leash, and once there trade it for a 20' one. He has his regular trees to sniff, but I don't mind following him around them.

  3. I'd like to be able to walk a cat but I doubt ours would go for that.

  4. I guess this could be a sign of the future to come. Who knows? I guess we'll still have dogs and everyone including our four legged friends will have established rights in the future.

  5. If there was a model that didn't have any danger of hurting the dog (or the owner!), that would be a wonderful invention indeed.

    1. Yes, now if only someone with the technical expertise sees this (or even dreams it up on their own), we'll be set.

  6. Or getting the leash tangled up his legs which makes me stop to free it.
Count me in for a bluetooth leash, for sure.

  7. Perfect!! I would be walking my freaked out dog then without having him take my shoulder out of its socket. He is terrified of the outside..phobic. No matter what we did or who. We brought him to, it didn’t matter.

    1. The dragging of a dog (or holding one back) might be more problematic. I would hope the makers would figure that one out.

  8. Or without the dog tripping you or tangling leashes with his brother. Sheesh, get this going already:)

  9. Not a dog owner, or lover of dogs; but since I walk so much I constantly see people trying to walk their dogs. I say trying, because they're constantly tangled up in the line and or having their shoulders pulled out of socket(always a small person with an over sized dog that they can't possibly control)....so your what if sounds like a really good idea to me. PLUS it would keep the dog with the owner vs it trying to run up to those walking, running, or biking by.

    1. All good reasons why this should be a thing.

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
