Overheard

Third period anatomy and physiology. Monday.

They had an assignment online. As the class was populated by eleventh and twelfth graders (sixteen and seventeen year olds), I wasn't terrible concerned about all the visible cell phones.

My mistake.

"Just say you need to get water..."

This came from a student's phone. Apparently, she and her female friend were arranging to meet up during class time.

The girl hissed into her cell phone, "The sub heard you." As did the rest of the class. (The room was pretty quiet. Not silent, but quiet enough.)

No other sounds came from her phone.

And the girl never did request that hall pass.

  1. For some reason, I thought cell phones in the classroom would not be allowed, as a distraction, like they'd be collected and given back end of each class.

    1. In an ideal world... Cell phones are so ubiquitous nowadays that many have stopped fighting them. Technically, we can confiscate and turn into the office if they have them when they're not supposed to, but most don't. Some days it's just easier to pretend I don't see them.

  2. Maybe it's just me, but I didn't know whether to shake my head or laugh hysterically. Some things never change...like teenagers.

    1. Why not both? I think both are both valid responses ;)

  3. Next time that happens you should tell them you didn't hear a thing!

  4. Glad she didn't dare request the hall pass after that!

  5. Why on earth wouldn't they text (or whatever the term is for the app they use)? Busted big time, lol.

  6. Even in the workplace management has given up the "no phone" policy. My last place of employment gave in to the cry of "what if my kids need me?" Well, their kids USED to just call the store! Too much time checking texts or updates to social media.

    1. Yup, it's a losing battle. I only engage when it's something there should be a clear boundary on, like if they're taking a test.

    1. This might teach them to have calls during class? Probably not.

  9. I remember trying to coordinate to meet up with my friends in class time before phones, haha! Good to see it's still going on, just technology has improved!

Hope you are having a good weekend :) We are having a quiet one at home as we are flooded in with all the rain!

    1. Sorry to hear about the flooding. Yeah, they used to be way more sneaky about finding ways to meet up. I think the pandemic has made them soft.

    1. They do. It was weird that she had made a call.

  11. This reminds me of our lunch out today. Someone kept sending and receiving text messages. The notification sound was *loud*. Ugh... My husband also taught me a new word - Nomophobia. That is one issue I don't expect to ever suffer.

    1. You'd think they'd realize, but no, they don't.
