At the heart of much speculative fiction
(and fiction in general) is a question.
What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out
there and see what you make of it. Do with it
as you please. If a for-instance is not specified,
feel free to interpret that instance as you
wish. And if you find this becomes
a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a
thank you in the acknowledgements. 😉
Are you familiar with the concept of a "true name"? It's an idea, generally in speculative fiction, where if someone finds out the being's "true name", that person can control the being. But I wondered...
What if objects, like computers or TVs or microwaves or ovens, had true names that gave the knower power over them?
I didn't know for True name concept, but it will be very interesting to control them knowing their True Names.
ReplyDeleteIt's a fantasy fiction thing. It'd be cool if it did work in everyday life.
DeleteIntriguing concept. I met a cousin in the old country several decades ago who was pregnant at the time. She wouldn’t let me take a photo of her because she was afraid her baby’s soul may be taken.
ReplyDeleteI suppose it would be interesting if nothing else!
ReplyDelete"Knowing something's true name gives you power over it. Once your personality is significantly changed your true name changes and releases you form all of the oaths and mistakes you make now that you are considered s different person." Seem allot of musicians are into this - changing their name does change how people "view" them.
ReplyDeleteI did not know the bit about changing personality changed name. I think I feel a story forming...
DeleteWe already talk to Siri and Alexa - why not talk to a television set named Bob?
ReplyDeleteBob? I think we can do better than Bob ;)
DeleteWe already have power over them. We can turn them on and off, switch channels etc... Now if only I could do that with my hubby.
ReplyDeleteI see you've never had a computer stop working on you for some inexplicable reason. Or suddenly do something that you need to have happen but you don't know how to do it. I was thinking along those lines, but I didn't specify, did I?
DeleteWe have Evelyn who is our own Goggle. Even so, I don't trust them.
ReplyDeleteYeah, you can change those names, can't you? And their accents... Too much to play around with.
DeleteJust think if I could find out the true name of my computer, or my phone. I could rule the world! (if I would want to.) There are a number of cultures where babies aren't named right away, for various reasons (including, sadly, infant mortality)
ReplyDeleteOr the true name of your boss' computer ;)
DeleteThat will be a whole lot of power, for a whole lot of people who will then control a whole lot of things!
ReplyDeleteI guess these devices' true names aren't expletives. lol
ReplyDeleteBut what if they are? But are you using the wrong swear word? What if you accidentally used a different word one time and suddenly, it works differently? Wow, that made me think.
