Vacation Denied

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements.
😉

What if your employer suddenly canceled your vacation? (A couple specifics: you put in for this vacation a while ago, you have plans that can't be changed, and you won't get your deposits back.)

  1. This happened to both my hubby and I. My boss tried this once, on me and I informed him that he accepted it at the beginning of the year and my plans are set. He just looked at me but backed down because he did accept it. My hubby did the same thing because we were going to Europe. They accepted, I booked the trip and then...much later, in June, they told him he could not go. he told them that he got the acceptance and they can not renege. They did not but, 2 weeks later, he was let go due to restructuring.

    1. "Restructuring", eh? I'm sure he was well rid of that job.

    2. I got told this as well back in September 2021, and 2 months later, they started hiring again.

  2. I'd pack some bags and move into the garage.

  3. I'd give him the bill.
    Fortunately, that has never happened.

    1. Oh, that might work. Probably not, but nice move.

  4. Definitely give the employer the bill!

  5. Sometimes procrastination serves you well. Couldn't make up our minds about going on cruise vacation with sister and husband. In a few days (due to anxiety about Covid) they backed out. They had some nuisance work to do because of cancelling.

    1. Yes, in this case procrastination works perfectly.

  6. Oh you’re bringing back a nightmare. Drew is a teacher so we plan our vacations around school. We planned a cruise for February 2013, during midwinter break. Then all the schools around here had to cancel midwinter break to make up for days lost to Hurricane Sandy.

    1. Oh yikes. That sucks. And that's one of those things that you can grumble about, but the employer isn't totally the bad guy here.

    2. Yeah, not really their fault, but it sucked.

  7. Depends on which job and when. At my last, I would probably have stayed and worked if the manager or assistant manager had an emergency, as in their absence I took over their duties. Before that, I'd have pressed the issue to higher ups, and the union. Once the schedule was set, it was set. I'm sure it happens all the time, and more so now with such a shortage of employees to cover even the basics.

    1. I don't think I'd want to continue working at a place that disregarded my planned vacation now. With the worker shortage, one could find a better job that would honor that vacation.

  8. It never happened to me, but it happened, years ago, to a friend who worked for the County where we lived at the time. (Her husband and my husband were in the same military unit.) She interviewed for a job with better pay and got it. Then her best friend at work interviewed at the same company and got a position there. Then, her husband, when his enlistment was over, got a job there, too! (I didn't follow them, by the way, but it was tempting.) I still smile, thinking of that. True story!

  9. In all my working life I never had a paid vacation. Even taking off these few days end of Feb could cost me my job. My clients could call company and request someone. And good bye job. Right now there a shortage of people to take care of people in there home.
Coffee is on and stay safe

  10. I'd go anyway and call in sick. On the way to the airport.

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
