Covering It with Yarn

I got the idea Wednesday night. Friday night I attempted it. And managed to complete it in about two hours. (That included a bit of swatching to get the measurements right.)

Can you tell what it is? Probably not as it's something I made up. Does this help?

You can kind of see what's in there, if you're looking closely. So, let me take it out...

Why would I made a cozy for a fidget spinner? Remember when I told you all about the hot new teen fad? Well, it's gotten to the point of annoyance. Turns out these things aren't so silent, especially not in a silent classroom.

It's not surprising that the things have invaded my subconscious since they've become ubiquitous.

Once I turned my brain on the problem, it didn't take me too long to work out how to cover it. And it even spins while it's encased in the cozy...

I'm going to tweak the pattern a bit before I write it up. If I write it up. I think my curiosity is now sated.

    1. They only just exploded in April, I think. They'll probably burn out over the summer.

  2. Fidget spinners drive me crazy! My son is constantly fidgeting with his. I like your little case, though. Maybe kids can keep them quiet in a case like that.

    1. They won't bang on things, but that whirring sound will still be there.

  3. I had heard of them and read about them on your blog. I hadn't seen one "in person" until a week ago at Wal-Mart. The people ahead of us; a mom with two teen sons were debating colors and finally agreed on what colors to get. One teen left and came back with 3 fidgets. I asked if that's what they were. They did look interesting, but I refrained from getting one.

I love your creation!! Very clever.

    1. I don't know about that. I know there will be a way to make the cozy annoying as well.

  7. I totally didn't recognize them. How cute. That might help muffle them at least!

  8. I heard about these spinners but have no clue what they are about and why. If they are that noisy then this is a good thing to make...teachers and parents will be very happy.

    1. It doesn't muffle the sound in the least. And the concept behind them is for those that fidget it gives their hands something to do. Although, I don't think they really help.

  9. Ha. I can imagine being in a classroom and expecting silence and hearing this odd whirr that just got louder as more students played with theirs.

    1. I think someone needs to make a YouTube video with just that scenario.

  10. I'm curious - have you seen any evidence in your classrooms if these devices work with students who have ADHD? As a sub, you may not know who has it "officially" but I would guess you have your suspicions. As a side note, my autistic brother in law was absolutely fascinated with spinning objects, I understand, when he was a toddler.

    1. I think they're more of a distraction than anything. But I haven't seen anyone who I know has ADHD with one, so I can't say for certain.

  11. HAHA...I knew when I first saw it what it was! The shape gave it away. That is too funny.

  13. Try selling them on Etsy and see what happens. You could make them in different designs and patterns. You never know.

  14. I still have never seen one of these in person but I did read a news article about how they're terrible things.

    1. How so, terrible? Annoying, sure. They don't do much, really. But compared to some other fads, it's not so bad.

  15. As with most fads, I just don't get it, but I do like that you have made a little blankie for 'em. Time to put 'em to bed huh?
