Friends to the End?

What if? It's the basis of many stories. We ask. We ponder. We wonder.

On Tuesdays I throw one out there. What if? It may be speculative. It may stem from something I see. It may be something I pull from the news.

Make of it what you will. If a for instance is not specified, interpret that instance as you wish. And if the idea turns into a story, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements 😉

I've been watching The Jinx, Part 2 on HBO. (I watched part 1 way back when as well.) We're only three episodes in, but a couple things came up that just need to be what ifs.

What if you found out your best friend murdered somebody? What if that somebody was your other best friend?

  1. First, I'd be very afraid that they might do me in! Then, I'd have to report it. I don't think I'd warn them, like, "Turn yourself in, or I will." I couldn't trust them or feel the same way about them, no matter the reason. Now, I suppose there might be some rare situation where self-defense was the reason, but you wrote "murder," and that's different!

  2. I'd play it "cool" until I'm away from the killer friend and then report it. Stay hidden until killer gets arrested.

  3. I would be dumbfounded, sad, you name it but I would turn her in. I would wonder why she killed my other best friend...was she jealous? I would be scared of her next move so jail would be the best.

  4. Yikes. Hope I'm never in that situation because I don't have any immediate answer!

  5. I guess I would wonder what I missed. I would bring it up to my therapist.

  6. Um, that's awkward and I'd probably wait til they were going to be out of town, pack up and take off, sending a registered letter to the local police department anonymously.

  7. I'd be in shock and feel completely betrayed.
After the initial disbelief, I'd report it, but I'd be terrified of the consequences.
I'd try to gather evidence without them knowing and go to the authorities.
    Scary thought!

  8. Ooh. The definition of murder can be broad. What a fascinating question. Thanks for putting it out there.

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
