Contemplating Next Steps

Last week I showed off my latest knitting mistake. Since then, I ripped it out, fixed it, and then ripped the whole thing out and started over.

The piece was just a touch too narrow for my purposes.

I started over, making the piece about an inch wider than before. And on Saturday I bound it off...

Now the real work begins...

I mentioned that it's going to be a mini iPad case. It's hard to visualize it in this context. What I'm planning to do...

...is to fold it over so that the iPad fits in like this...

Before it's finished, it'll need some sort of edging (I'm leaning towards a reverse slip stitch in crochet, but we'll see). I'm planning to sew in a bit of elastic to hold the iPad in place. And I'm contemplating lining it with some sort of cardboard to hold it stiff.

It'll need a button and buttonhole to keep it closed. I was thinking of adding a handle or strap somewhere, too.

As I was planning this out, I knew I wouldn't be able to imagine how it was all going to work until I had the long strip of fabric to work with. Now that it's here, it's time to plan.

I'll welcome suggestions, but a warning: I have a pretty good image of what I'm going for. I'm just not sure how I'm going to get it. I may have to let this sit for a couple weeks.

I got a question or two last week about my lightbox...

I bought if off Amazon. It's this one.

  1. I know hardly anything about knitting. Even this time and last time it looked great.

  4. Starting over is not fun, but more satisfying once it's done again 😁
    Great future iPad pouch

  5. It's looking good! And now I want to learn the crochet stitch you mentioned. OR at least have an idea of what it is. :-)

I vote for a strap more than handles, but that's just personal preference. I carry a gigantic purse, and way to much other stuff, so always prefer a strap so I can just throw it over my shoulder.

    1. I'll consider it. Thanks.

The reverse single crochet stitch (or crab stitch) is just a single crochet worked backwards: https://www.dummies.com/crafts/crocheting/stitches/how-to-crochet-a-reverse-single-crochet-stitch/

I first learned it 20 years ago as the edging for a sweater I had knit. (My first sweater. And I had been crocheting maybe a year.) It's been my go-to ever since.

  6. I'm not a knitter, so I don't have any suggestions. I just think it's coming along nicely.

  7. In my head I see it like a purse with the two short ends stitched off (or however you do it) and the flap that goes over with the button - is that what you mean? Kinda like the walking purse you made.

  8. Good luck on getting what you are wanting. I hate when I know what I want and can't get it.

    1. Isn't that the worst? Especially when you don't have the skill set to achieve it?

  10. I missed some of your previous posts, as I took a break from blogging for a while. Shall catch up with them soon.
I am not good with knitting. But, your work looks good.
And it reminds me of the craft my father used keep himself busy with. He used to recycle containers of Corn Flakes, Toothpaste etc to make boxes and covers.
It is very nice to have such creative pursuits.

  12. Just a question out of curiousity - if you line it with cardboard, does that mean you can't wash the case? By the way, I admire anyone who can design - I am still so dependent on patterns, even after crocheting for almost 50 years.

    1. The plan is to keep one end of the lining open so I can remove the cardboard so I can still wash the case. We'll see if it works.
