Renamed

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements.😉

What if every new year we had to take a new name?

  1. I would like this! There are so many interesting names out there that it could be fun to choose a different one every year. But then of course you'd have to get a new driver's license, checks, bank cards, etc. Would we also have to get a new Social Security number? Could be a bit complicated the more you think about it.

    Happy New Year!

  2. I'd like that idea. I could never stand my name and I'd love the chance to try new ones out.

    1. You seem to be in the minority on this one ;)

  5. Ooh, that would be interesting, and hard! I never much liked my name (tho I'm pretty used to it by now) so it would fun to choose a new one. Eleanor, perhaps...

  6. I studied cultures where you took a new name at puberty and that was your adult name. But every year? I kind of like that except for the drag of having to change all your ID, and learning the new names of all your friends, family and co-workers. That would become a real drag.

    1. But if it was something we always did, there'd be ways of adapting.

  7. That could be confusing for agencies like the IRS, I would think.

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
