I Robot

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements. ðŸ˜‰

This week's question is inspired by Westworld on HBO...

What if you discovered that your consciousness (your personhood) was now living in a robot body? (That is, you don't realize that your body is now a robot body until you've been told. Just now.)

  1. I think I might like it if it was more healthier and less aches and pains :)

  2. No more aches and pains! Stronger. Maybe even super human powers.

  3. I think I would have a mild freak-out.

    1. Yeah, that's kinda what happened on the show I referenced, although not quite in the way you'd expect.

  4. Hmm...Why would they place me in a body that is full of aches and pains plus many other issues. Now if they placed me in a great looking body...like Sophia Vergera or Sophia Loren without any physical issues...I'm ok with that...once I stop reflecting on all the issues that can come about (body never dies but everyone around you does, living for centuries...)

    1. Are the aches and pains actual or just remembered? (In the robot body, I mean. In your body, totally real. Just to be clear.)

  5. I guess hearing that I would have a lot of questions...like WHY is it in a robot body and can I do anything fantastic wiit it. Can I stop speeding trains, can I lift buildings....etc. And readying Alex's comment....I COULD KISS FIBRO goodbye.

    1. It would depend on who was doing the robot building, I suppose.

  8. Well, since my body feels pretty human and I can do all the stuff humans do then this might mean I've finally gotten my wish. To be IMMORTAL!!!!

  10. I've often wondered what it would feel like to do like some movies and change bodies with another person. Not to look different, but what would it feel like? What if my arms were shorter than I'm used to? What if color is really all just a matter of perspective and their eyes see magenta differently than I'm used to? What about the mouth? I have a big mouth and straight teeth. And I can't curl my tongue like some can. That would be fun!
What about hair? Hair can be an extremely unique feature and I'd probably destroy it trying to figure out how to deal with theirs.
In short, it would be a fun exploration.

    1. Yeah, we've kind of spent a lifetime getting used to our own bodies. Another body would be a different experience.

  13. I'd say, "why did you put me in a second rate robot body. My back hasn't operated right. There's that arthritis in my right knee. And...." Yeah, I would give it to them but good, and demand a new body. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
