Allergic
At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements. 😉
What if you discovered you had a mild allergy to one of your favorite foods (like a persistent cough or a small rash developed after you ate it)?

I appreciate your comments.
I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.
*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.

For Hot Tamales, I'd suffer through it now and then.
ReplyDeleteIt would suck! Since I am hypoglycemic I am not supposed to have sugar, Caffeine or starch. I am good for the most part but chocolate gets to me every time or a nice German torte. believe me, when I was undiagnosed, it was horrible. I loved fizzy drinks like coke but I had to switch and found soda water missed with OJ does the trick. If I had to give that up....I have no idea what I would do
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you have a more extreme case of the question. (I wasn't going extreme case as I know how serious that can get.) I know there are some fair chocolate substitutes out there, for when you really need a fix ;)
DeleteI think I would take my chances with it and eat it in small quantities on special occasions :)
ReplyDeletebetty
I already feel like I deal with that with some foods. But whatever. I still eat them.
ReplyDelete*whispers* That's where this question came from--me eating something that provoked a small reaction /*whispers*
DeleteOh, wow. Sorry you've suffered, Liz. That stinks. We feel blessed not to have food allergies. As for your cool comment on my blog post today, I have to say that my stories almost always *start* with a title. Well, at least to my conscious awareness. ~grin~ Happy Writing!
ReplyDelete"Suffered"? No. There was no suffering involved. If there was suffering, I wouldn't have used the question. I keep my traumatic posts to my subbing experiences ;)
DeleteNow, I start my stories from a main character finding themselves in some sort of situation. Perhaps that's why I'm so bad at titling :)
Some things are just worth it.
ReplyDeleteI guess so...
DeleteOh man. I would not like that one bit. I love food...
ReplyDeleteI get a little rash from yellow dye, but I still eat lemon candy sometimes.
ReplyDeleteYup, that's exactly what I was asking. I guess the rash isn't too irritating?
DeleteI now find my lips and tongue swell when I eat soy sauce and heavily seasoned popcorn. My hands itch as well. Part of life and part of migraines I think.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. Is it the salt? Or is it something else?
DeleteIve substituted milk with soya and its ugh but I'm getting over the horror of actually having to swallow the stuff. Its the price of looking awesome I guess, lol.
ReplyDeleteActually, in real life, I am sensitive to cinnamon, yet I love it. When I was young, my mouth would be sore after chewing Dentyne Gum. As an adult, I had to be tested for allergies after unexplained hive outbreaks and it turns out I tested slightly positive for cinnamon. I have to be very careful not to eat food with excessive amounts of this spice. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteAt least you now know what's causing it. That's a plus.
DeleteWhen I was younger I ate everything and now as I get older I'm finding out my digestion is more touchy so I'm learning to rethink my eating habits. Not fun
ReplyDeleteCoffee is on
Depends on which favorite food, if it was chocolate, I'd suffer to eat it.
ReplyDeleteI guess, I would skip that food item. It will no longer be my favourite :-(
ReplyDeleteWould you miss it?
DeleteI guess, for a while I will miss them. After that, I won't. Because what we miss and what I won't miss are all acquired attributes.
DeleteSeveral years ago, a doctor told me I needed to stop with the coffee, spicy food, sweets, and white rice. They're all back in my diet. My skin was better when they weren't.
ReplyDeleteIf it were a mild allergy I would cont with it until that allergy became a big issue. You see, I love food! I don't smoke, I don't drink anything but a beer here and there so it leaves good food. HAHA
ReplyDeleteI guess it depends on how bad you're suffering, eh?
DeleteI've had this happen, I kept eating it and wound up with anaphylaxis (throat swelling closed) one day without any escalation in between :(
ReplyDeleteOh really? That's good to know.
DeleteEh I have that with fruits. They aren't my *favorite* but I enjoy them and eat them now and again even though they irritate my mouth. It's obnoxious but sometimes ya still need whatever it is. lol
