Alien Spam

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements ;)

Through the Wormhole is back on. Hooray! It gives me all sorts of interesting things to ponder.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find the clip that prompted this week's question, but this clip is from the same episode. (I tried to embed it, but Blogger just isn't having it today.) It gives you an idea of the gist of where this particular question came from...

What if spam messages (the ones that sound like they were composed by someone whose first language is not English) are actually from aliens trying to figure out how to communicate with us?

  1. Then they better take a course, because we're not buying it.

  2. Another interesting question. So many of these type of spam emails get deleted that it makes you wonder if it would be an effective way of aliens learning how to communicate. I think they would have to search further rather than spam to figure out our types of communication :)

    1. Yeah, it's not very effective nor are they talking to the sorts of people they'd want to talk to.

  3. Now that would be funny because they have the knowledge and capability to travel through space like we travel in an airplane but screw up on our simple computers. They must be savants:)

  4. I would say then that the aliens best learn how to communicate in my language if they want me to read their messages!

  5. I get phone calls from them now. They tell me that my computer has a virus, to give them my email address and they will fix it.
    Stupid aliens.

    1. They've really got human voices down pat...

  6. If that's true, then I'd really like to know why they're fixated on claiming they're widows from the Ivory Coast looking to give away their money.

  7. I don't reply to any spam messages.
I would suggest the aliens should think of better methods to learn the language.

  8. If that were the case, suddenly spam would become more interesting. I would definitely be sympathetic and likely adjust my spam filters to let the messages through. I'm all for lending my support to anyone who's willing to communicate, even an alien.

  9. I think they are on Facebook. Not here.... just pondering that thought.

  10. What a unique thought. I've thought a lot of things about spammers, but never that they might be aliens. :D

  11. When I first started my blog and no one was commenting I used to treasure those spam messages. I would have been happy for them to be aliens :)

  12. That would explain all those blog comments about how interesting my posts are and how wonderful my writing is that end with check out my site and a mystery link. Unfortunately, that's not working either since I just delete those too.

Until I delete my blogger profile, I'm stuck commenting as

  13. I keep getting the alien message about how someone and her daughter were down at the seashell, The little girl put a seashell to her ear and was bitten. Now I know it was an alien spam. That explains everything. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com
