Botched Experiment

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements ;)

What if life on earth is an alien experiment that got out of the aliens' control?

  1. What a scary premise! If we are indeed an alien experiment that got out of control, let's hope they've lost interest in us and are leaving us to our own devices. Unless, of course, they are a really benevolent civilisation and could help us with our problems here on Earth. An end to war, poverty and greed would be a wonderful start. Are you listening, aliens?

  2. Why not? It could very well be the truth, and they might be somewhere in another galaxy shaking their heads and saying, "What are we going to do about these kids?"

  3. Well, as long as they don't come with a giant can of raid I am blissfully happy in my ignorance:)

  4. I'd be okay with it as long as they didn't try to bring it back under control; that could be a bit scary :)

  5. You know, my second and third book explore that idea. Only it isn't Earth, it's Tgren. Close enough.

  6. I'd buy that. I think there would be an interesting story behind what would happened if they tried to "fix" everything.

  7. Could be...in fact, I seem to recall a Twilight Zone episode where a couple was in a neighborhood they couldn't get out of...turned out it was all part of a young girl's play area in her bedroom on another planet.

    1. Wasn't that every other episode? (Just kidding. Love Twilight Zone. Many good What Ifs? there.)

  8. Wouldn’t surprise me one bit given society seems headed toward chaos. If the aliens couldn’t keep us in line, what chance do we have of managing ourselves? It all makes sense now... sort of.

  9. I can definitely see life here as a botched experiment, us humans at least. But maybe they wanted us to be badass and starting wars all the time. They'll take us away from this dying planet and give us a fresh start, on the condition we fight other aliens they don't like.

  10. There would be nothing we could do about it...

  11. I think someone has an actual theory about that. I read about it recently. It is supposed to explain why back problems are so prolific or something to do with too much gravity. There's another theory Earth is an alien prison!

  12. That's quite a scary thought because they might try to regain control of the experiment and then what would happen?

  13. maybe I should start reading more science fiction because I can't even think of an experiment that with it up with starting a new Planet.

  14. My mind has actually considered something along those lines from time to time, but I always come back to the fact of the order and perfection in nature. And that always leads me back to a firm belief in a Creator that is much more than some alien intelligence.

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
