Demon Child

What if? It's the basis of many stories. We ask. We ponder. We wonder.

On Tuesdays I throw one out there. What if? It may be speculative. It may stem from something I see. It may be something I pull from the news.

Make of it what you will. If a for instance is not specified, interpret that instance as you wish. And if the idea turns into a story, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements 😉

Did you ever see the show Evil? I wrote about it a while back. It had it's series finale a couple weeks ago, and the ending brought up a great "what if?".

What if you became the parent to a child from an "evil" source (such as a demon)? Would you believe that nurturing the child to be good would work? Or is such a being only able to be a dark entity?

  1. If from a truly evil source, I wouldn't expect it to be able to turn away from doing evil if it it wanted. There's nurture, yet in this theoretical situation nature would take over. The actual parent probably had some intent for leaving the child to be raised by a human. All I am thinking of now is Good Omens! The BOOK! The BOOK! (Sorry, I hate television adaptations. They so seldom get it right.)

  2. every moms nightmare!!! If it was the product of an evil source, chances are evil will win out. What would I do, can't say for sure unless put in that spot.

  3. If he was truly evil and of the devil, only God could fix him.

  4. I love that show! I tend to think that there is no real evil when it comes to demons, ect. If you're brought up in a nurturing environment you can be good instead. Or maybe I read too many paranormal romance books with demons in them who were raised by good moms and they turned out good with somewhat bad tempers. lol

  5. I don't watch Evil, but my understanding is that demons are supernatural, not human (i.e. they can take human shape but aren't humans). That being said, we don't know how nature vs. nuture would work when it comes to demons. My gut says "nope, instincts will take over; it will always be a dark entity."

  6. That show was trippy. -really sort of skirting the line between real and imagined, fantasy and reality. I'm firmly in the skeptic camp.

  7. No have not heard of Evil. But on this note, there is a new movie called Apartment 7A. Julia Gardner and Diane Weist are in it. I think it is a remake of Rosemary's Baby. It looks good. I never had kids so not sure what I would do.

  8. The origin does matter. An evil one, all the more.

  9. I'm not sure you can fix pure evil in someone though I believe in the power of change.

  10. The concept reminds me of the adult cartoon "Ugly Americans" that actually had a silly episode titled Demon Baby. My husband and I wish the series lasted longer. As for me in that situation, I'd probably try to find an orphanage in some hell dimension.

  11. What an intriguing "what if"!
I love the idea of questioning whether a child from an "evil" source could be nurtured into goodness.
It really challenges the nature versus nurture debate.
I'd like to believe love and care could prevail, but it's a fascinating dilemma.

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
