Twelfth grade English. It was co-taught, so I took roll while the other teacher explained the lesson. (They were continuing analyzing an article that they had read earlier in the week.)
As is normal, some students blinked out of the meet only to return. I've stopped worrying when a student disappears from the meet. Most of the time they're having technical issues.
In second period, a student returned from logging out. He explained why in the chat:
Sorry for leaving my aunt just got out and I was on the phone with her
Besides the kiddo's propensity for not using punctuation, the explanation left me wondering. . .
Just got out of where?
In my experience, that usually means they are free to society. A teacher friend told me about a student (8 yr old.) sharing that his mom just got out of jail. The class cheered.

DeleteYeah, she just got out of jail/prison. Hopefully she didn't get infected with COVID.
ReplyDeleteMy guess is either jail or the hospital. One of my son's childhood friends had a Mom who, unfortunately, was in and out of jail. He was being raised by his father, who tried to give him and his siblings some stability. Sad but I guess too true nowadays.

ReplyDeleteThese days I'd probably guess out of the hospital, which is great news that she got out, but could have just as easily been prison.

DeleteThe kid clearly believes that the answer is obvious or the situation is ubiquitous enough to not need to specify. Sad no matter what - there are only so many places to get 'out' of and most are institutions or some sort.
ReplyDeleteHis teacher might have known the situation already, or perhaps he just forgot a word in the message. Who knows?
