Bird Watching

Back in the spring, I mentioned that I've started regularly walking. Sometimes, those walks take me to local parks.

There have been some interesting birds about. Alas, I only had my cell phone with me, so I didn't get great pictures.

Two weeks ago I was at a local wetlands. (It's off of Pacific Coast Highway. On the other side of the road is the beach and the actual ocean.) The winds were gusting, but I managed to capture a couple interesting sights.

I have no idea what kind of bird that is. Nor do I know what kind of bird this other one is. . .

But there were a few of them there. . .

Then a few days later, I was walking in a park a bit closer to home when I walked past this bird. . .

I did not attempt to photograph the flying birds, though. There were many in the area, especially at the wetlands, but I did not think my cell phone camera was up to the task. I saw quite a few people with their fancy cameras with their long lenses. I'm sure they got some great shots.

Are you still getting out for walks? (Or has it gotten too cold?)

  1. Look like some kind of egrets.
Chilly this week but never too cold for a walk.

  2. You got some pretty good ones! It's just finally cool enough here in Florida to start getting back out for walks :)

  4. The white ones are egrets, but the darker ones are herons.

  5. Egrets and herons. And we're finally warm (yesterday was 34'c / 94'F), so I plan on getting back into walking on a regular basis. And no, I didn't need it to get to 94' before I started walking...we had wet and windy for a couple of weeks first. It had been in the high teens (which is the 60s in farenheit) before the rain.

  6. #2 looks like an egret. Last one looks like a blue heron. I am guessing these, based on birds I've seen in Florida. We may all be looking at a lot of nature in the coming months.

    1. Thanks. I actually ran across the last one again yesterday. I guess he's wintering here in our local park.

  7. I agree with other commenters that the last one was a heron. We saw a lot of them when we lived in the San Diego area. Those wetlands looked like a great place to bird watch and to get some exercise :) I walk 40 minutes on the treadmill LOL 5 times a week, does that count? I do go walking on Saturdays when hubby walks Winslow. It was 88 degrees today so we aren't cooling down too much :)

  8. Nice that so many commenters could identify the birds! I had no clue but still enjoyed your pictures. We will actuallly be going for a walk tomorrow even though it will be cold. It's only going to get colder so we are going to take our chance while we can.

    1. It's that time of year, isn't it? But one can still walk in the cold, up to a certain point.

  9. Pretty birds, crane, egret or heron, I don't really know the difference, but they look like one of them ;)

    1. We have ducks in our complex, so I never have to go far to see those.

  11. Oh, I long to see the ocean again. :) Thanks for sharing these photos. It's cooled off somewhat here, but not terribly cold yet. Regardless, unless winds are high or walkways slippery, even in calf deep snow I still enjoy getting out for a walk. Be well and stay safe!

  12. I used to see those same birds when I lived on the east coast. In and around the wetlands. I see others have already named them for you. I am not walking much anymore. Mostly because I've become lazy through all the typhoons. It's still in the 80s though.

    1. I imagine it would be hard to get out to walk in a typhoon.

  13. Picturesque. Lovely birds.
It's gradually getting colder here in the south of India too. The north, which is closer to the Himalayas, are much colder.
