Rotten Tomatoes 300 Essential Movies

It turns out that teaching online doesn't lead to a whole lot of interesting stories. Sigh. But that's okay. That's what random quiz Fridays are for.

I went back to the list site (where we tried the Disney challenge) because I rather enjoyed it. Today's challenge:

Rotten Tomatoes 300 Essential Movies to Watch Now - July 2020 Edition

This has a good mix of recent and classic. Some of these movies I'm very familiar with, but I've never sat down and watched. (For example: Jaws. Really. I mean, allegedly I was with my parents when they saw it, but I have limited memory of it.)

And there are a couple I'm not sure if I've seen them or not. I've seen clips. I've seen bits here and there. But did I sit down and watch the whole thing through? I didn't count those.

I got 38% or 113 of the 300. A fair showing. I think there are probably 10 to 15 movies on that list that I do want to see. There's a good 20 that I will never, under any circumstances, subject myself to. (*side eyes The Red Shoes*)

So, how many have you seen? How many would you like to see?

  1. I scored 63% which is above average and only a few reach that point. I am surprised by some films being on this list like Say Anything. The Red Shoes is a brilliant film and a must see. She plays a ballerina who is taken over by the director of the film who is obsessed with her. She also loves a man who loves her and now, in the play she wears the red shoes and can’t stop dancing. Brilliant piece on Obsession, wanting something no matter what. It’s beautiful in the colours.cinematography and the story

    1. I have never seen The Red Shoes. I must put it on the 'watch list'.

  2. I have watched a BUNCH of movies in my time. :D
Some films on the list are absolute gems. For example, The Night of the Hunter starring Robert Mitchum and Shelley Winters is one of the best and freakiest pieces of cinema I have ever had the pleasure (?) of watching.

    1. Yeah, The Night of the Hunter is another I'll give a pass to. I haven't seen very many compared to many.

  3. I was 65% - 195 movies. Yeah, I watch a lot of films.
You really need to watch Jaws. One of the greatest movies of all time.

  4. 53% is my score. There were a few that looked interesting but I didn't write them down. Well, two of them I did, The Rules of the Game and Saving Face.

  5. I only saw 27%, which isn't a big surprise since I'm not that into movies. Does it count as having "seen" a movie if you started watching it but got so bored you had to stop a half hour in?

  6. 51 out of 300. 17%. Was surprised to see Night of the Living Dead on the list. I saw that one lol. Cute quiz!

  7. I scored 26% - but I love movies. There were a lot there that were horror/scary so that wiped out quite a few for me. Then there were ones where I wasn't sure if I had actually seen the movie, or just had seen bits or heard a lot about it.

  8. 103....and I had to really think back on some of those, they go back years! I love it. As a dating teen (years ago) I would see about 4 movies a month. Course they did not cost what they do now and I question how a teen these days could date taking a girl to dinner and out to a movie.

You didn't beat the avg. score of 113". No surprise there. I'm actually surprised I saw as many of 28% of them. There were a handful more I couldn't remember for sure (mainly classics from the 40's), so I decided not to list them.

    1. I would think "essential" means important culturally, so I'm not surprised you've seen as many as 28%. These would be films that most of us would be most likely to have seen.

  10. 137 out of 300 or 46%.
    Eh, not too bad.

  12. Though I do watch movies in all three languages -- English, Hindi, Malayalam -- not very often. Many in the list, I haven't got around to watching, though I have heard of them. But I have watched most of the acclaimed ones. This list is handy when I am wondering what movie to watch. I got 54 of 300 - 18%.

  13. I've seen 61 of them. I didn't count ones that I've only seen bits and pieces of. There are a few I want to see, but definitely not all of them.

    1. Yeah, there are definitely some on that list that don't need to be seen. Of course, what doesn't interest me might interest you, and vice versa.
