Year of the Wombat?

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements. ðŸ˜‰

What if years had names rather than numbers?

  1. Wombat year sounds good. I like that name, better than Duck-billed platypus

    1. I think I could come up with a better name, though. It was just the word that popped into my head when I titled this thing.

  2. That would be way too confusing. But of course, I'm just thinking that because I'm used to the numbers. I like numbering things. It keeps them in order.

  3. I agree that it would be too confusing. I like the sense of order in the numbers and I wonder who would be in charge of naming the years and how many years in advance would they be naming?

    Happy New Year!

  4. A number of cultures (including some which are Native American) have that custom when it comes to naming years. They may name a year "The Year of the Great Drought" or "The Year we Starved" or something like that. They don't get confused. It works for them.

    1. I'm not surprised it's not an original idea.

  5. The Year of My Mid-Life would be what I'd name 2020. :D

    1. I didn't think of personal names. That's a thought...

  6. I guess we sort of do...I am from the baby boomer generation or some it known as an era, like Victorian era.
But what I call 2019. It would take a little thinking on it

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
