Newcomers
At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements. 😉
One day I sat down to write a bunch of "what if?" questions to get a bit ahead on the blog. A theme emerged...
What if extra terrestrials were to reveal themselves to us tomorrow? What if they revealed that they had just arrived to our world? (That is, all the previous sightings of UFOs and Area 51 and such were proven to be hoaxes--or at least not done by them.)

I appreciate your comments.
I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.
*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.

first contact? I'd want them to be Vulcans, not Kanamits.
ReplyDeleteThere are all sorts of ways that can go wrong, aren't there?
DeleteIt would depend if they handed out cookbooks.
ReplyDeleteYup. There are all sorts of ways this could go wrong.
DeleteI feel like the 'Not done by them' is a very interested what-if scenario. The implication being that it WAS aliens but that it's a secondary sect or species. It raises the question of who or what they are then.
ReplyDeleteGood point. What if there were several different alien species... (This is a series. I think I forgot this particular scenario, but I'll add it to the end of the series. Thanks.)
DeleteOther aliens could've visited. Maybe there's more than one kind out there.
ReplyDeleteI did not specify otherwise...
DeleteI would hope they were friendly.
ReplyDeletebetty
I'd ask if they could get me out of here.
ReplyDeleteI'd scream.
ReplyDeleteAnd then...?
DeleteIf there can be one species, there can be more than one. And why aren't the aliens who revealed themselves not forthcoming about the ones who already visited them? Just think of the speculation, all the TV pundits, the people who use this as a cover for their own bad behavior. Yuck.
ReplyDeleteThe other things could be hoaxes. No one is believing those were hoaxes...
DeleteSome of us would have trouble with whole ideal of ET's Like they can't or won't except anything that makes them unfortable.
ReplyDeleteCoffee is on
Maybe the aliens who reveal themselves tomorrow are from a different part of the galaxy and all previous sightings were from another group of aliens from another part of the galaxy. Maybe the new aliens would be able to help us track down the other ones and finally bring them out in the open. Hmm...
ReplyDeleteCould be...
DeleteWell that would have everyone questioning why we had all been thinking that we had been visited before. But then again, it might not have been this group from whatever planet but maybe it was another group from another planet....so that would mean there were MORE out there...
ReplyDeleteThat seems to be where everyone went with this question, which is something I had not even considered.
DeleteI keep thinking of the movie, Chicken Little.
ReplyDeleteAh. Hadn't thought of that one.
