Earvin Strikes Again

As luck would have it, I was back in the math class at the continuation high school exactly a week after my last run in with Earvin...

(I've known Earvin for a while. Last week he pestered me until he managed to find a way to get excused from class. Check out the links for the full story.)

As soon as he arrived in class, he started working the excuses. Could he...?

I cut him off. I explained that I had gotten into trouble with the counselor last week for allowing him to leave class. (This was an exaggeration. While the counselor had talked to me, it was more of a heads up about Earvin's penchant for avoiding math than "trouble". But Earvin would more easily understand if I termed it "trouble".)

So, Earvin found a seat...

Alas, it wasn't his assigned seat.

(This teacher is pretty strict about lots of things, including students sitting in their assigned seats. They all know this, but they still grumble when I call them on it.)

The instructional aide requested that Earvin sit in his assigned seat. He argued that he wasn't bothering anybody in the seat he had chosen to sit. (He sat next to this girl...)

So, back and forth we went. He wanted to know why he had to sit in his assigned seat when he wasn't bothering anybody. (I wasn't about to get the girl into it. If he was bothering her, she wasn't saying.) I said we needed to follow his teacher's rules.

He said the teacher sometimes let him sit a couple seats away from his assigned seat. I said that would be fine. He countered with if that was fine, why couldn't he sit next to the girl, then?

We reached a stalemate. So, he asked to use the restroom. Someone was out of class, so he had to wait. Then he found the coup de grĂ¢ce... Could he see the nurse?

I pretty much let anyone who asks go to the health office. They could be lying. But I don't know that for sure. So, of course, I let him go.

And so, Earvin managed to get out of math class without doing any work. Again.

Earvin: 2. Me: 0.

Although, I did record the whole thing for Mr. F to deal with upon his return.

What was your best excuse to get out of math class (or doing your math homework)? Or were you weird like me and actually liked math?

Today's A to Z Challenge post brought to you by the letter...

  1. I was not weird like you and i hated math. LOL. That kid!! Holy cow. If he spent half his time doing math instead of trying to get out of class...

  2. I never got out of Math class (thought I didn't like it, either). I did have a continuous line of excuses for getting out of phy. ed. though. I really should have participated. Maybe I would be in better shape as an adult. Great post!

    1. Oh, I doubt it. PE in school has little to do with adult fitness, at least from what I've observed.

  3. I liked math most of the time. I would do my homework as quickly as possible (in school, if I could manage it) so that I could go home and do other things... like read. :p

    1. I just didn't want to lug my book home ;) If we only adopted Earvin's techniques... (Although, there's a reason why he's at the continuation high school.)

    2. LOL. We didn't have lockers in my school so I would have to lug the book home anyway.

    1. I first met him in an opportunity class. He's been this way for years.

  5. That's got to be frustrating, he causes enough disruption that he manages to get through the class without doing any work. Hope the balance swings back to you next time!

    1. Most people just hunker down and get through it, right?

  7. Better safe than sorry when it comes to the nurse visits, but yeah, he was most definitely playing you. He's the type who would do anything to get out of work.

  9. Is it legal to audio record the class session if it is allowed and approved by powers that be? And inform the class that this was being done?

Man, I would love to play back that audio to the teacher while you eat popcorn and drink diet cola.

    1. Ah, but the thing is, this teacher doesn't really need that. I give the condensed version in my note to him, and he takes care of it.

(The last time I covered his class, one student had a big meltdown over eating in class. That student was no longer enrolled in class this time--a week later.)

  10. I don’t think I ever made excuses to get out of any of my classes. Math was not my strong suit. Go figure, I married a math teacher. :)

  11. Hi Liz .. I enjoyed maths - but we were never allowed to leave class, or muck around like he does ... I hope his teacher sorts him out - cheers Hilary

  13. I liked math and was in advanced classes until junior high. Then things weren't so enjoyable. ~grin~ I didn't normally try to get out of attending but had a diabetic friend in a literature class. That teacher liked us, her best students, so she'd let me accompany him for a snack. You know... so he had someone nearby if he passed out in the hall or something. We'd wander around cutting up and laughing. Ah. Good times.

    1. I was barely getting by in math until algebra. I can't multiply worth a darn... I guess you didn't miss too much literature ;)

  14. I hated Maths. I'd just tune out. There'd be monkeys juggling in my head. Gosh he sounds painful.

  15. He sounds like a handful. I probably would have let him go to the nurse too.
