Porcupine Stitch Torture

I got some yarn for Christmas. So, now I'm knitting a scarf for me 😎

I found a stitch pattern in one of Barbara Walker's stitch dictionaries. Something reversable. I swatched. It seemed to be a fairly easy pattern. So, I thought I was good to go.

Then, Saturday, I discovered I had made an error. I spent a while trying to fix, until I ultimately had to ladder back several rows (but just in the one section).

(Luckily, the pattern repeat is only 12 stitches. It made the section I needed to fix very contained. Totally doable.)

I still have no idea where I went wrong. But I got it fixed.

I kept going, only to run into another error. That I had made just after discovering the first error...

Some days I just need to set down the knitting.

  1. Did you get the other error fixed as well?

I love the color, by the way. It looks great.

  2. I gave up on knitting and switched to crocheting since I can mindlessly hook and loop while watching tv. But of course there was the Catastrophic Sock episode...oh the horror. Like it was made for the Alien beast rather than human. 😱

    1. Sounds like someone didn't make a test swatch...

  3. Sorry you had to keep fixing errors. Glad you're making something for you though!

  4. Sorry about the errors...I hate having to take stuff out once I worked so hard to get it there. But I love that look. That will make a great scarf.

  5. Nice that you're making a scarf for yourself. I'm sure you'll get through the errors and it will be beautiful when it's done.

    1. It seems like I make lots of mistakes on anything I make for me. But then again, I did pick a new to me stitch pattern, so I'll chalk it up to the learning curve.

  8. Great color and the way it twists into that shape is interesting.

  11. Knitting just always seems like torture to me, I can't get into that zen space of just letting my fingers go. And I wish I could because I always need 13 projects going at once.

    1. It takes practice. I've been knitting 30 years. It took a while before it got easy (and even then, it isn't always easy ;).

  13. I feel your pain. I made a mistake on something I was knitting the other day, but fortunately, it was early on, so not much progress was loss frogging it.

    1. I no longer frog something unless it's near the beginning. There's usually another fix ;)

  14. Better to set it aside until you feel better which i have done when I created something. The colour is sunshine and, I believe, your favourite colour which will look great once you are done

  16. Lovely yarn. By the way, the link to laddering back (I was intrigued, because I don't knit - wondered if this could be applied to crochet) didn't work - website said the owner was going to refresh the site at some point. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

    1. How weird, it works for me. You can try Googling it. It just means to drop back a column of stitches. Alas, it won't work in crochet. It's the nature of how the stitches are made.

  17. I feel like the easiest instructions are also the easiest to mess up. You think you've got it, you get distracted, and boom! Problem. But at least you noticed it pretty quickly. I feel like this happens to me all of the time…

    1. We don't really have autumn here. (Well, not an autumn where wearing a scarf is advisable.) But it'll be fun for winter :)
