Sounds Like

7th grade world history. They were working on a project about China.

A student asked if he could look something up on his phone. He needed to find an image of something so he could draw it for his project. (They were creating "scrolls" of Chinese inventions.) So, once I said yes to one, I had to say yes to the rest of them.

Surprisingly, they all used their phones for their assignment. (Well, mostly. There was the incident of the boy who took an unauthorized picture of a girl...) They were looking up maps. They were looking up images...

One boy gave Siri a query: "Images of ships."

Siri gave him images of chips.

The boy was not happy. Others in the class chimed in on how hit and miss Siri can be. I figured the room had a bit too much noise for Siri to make out what the boy was asking. So, I suggested that the boy emphasize the "sh" sound...

The boy didn't get images of ships. But what he got images of did start with sh...

(I really should have seen this one coming.)

"Who takes pictures of their poop?"

Who indeed?

  1. LOL with the "sh" images he subsequently got. I use google speak if I'm too lazy to type in something for the search engine on my tablet. It is funny how it interprets what I say sometimes, however, on the plus side it has always showed me things I might not have otherwise found. It gives me hope though that voice recognition still needs to be perfected since my job know does involve editing voice recognition files. Once they are perfected, I'm sure I'll be out of a job.

  2. I do not know if there could ever be a logical answer to that question. But I imagine re-focusing students was just about impossible.

    1. Surprisingly it wasn't. They were a pretty good group, so they settled back to work easily enough. (Which shows why I allowed the cell phones in the first place.)

  3. Oh my..I didn't see that one coming and it seems, neither did you. I have no idea who would take pictures of their poop but human beings can be gross

  4. Oh, this made me laugh, sadly. I don't know how you do it, Liz. I'm sure I've said this before. Yeah, I agree with Brigit: humans can be gross.

    1. The situation made me laugh, too. Out loud. In front of the class. But in this situation, I think it was warranted.

  5. Yikes. My brother-in-law said there's an entire site dedicated to pictures of people's poop in the toilet. I don't even want to know!

  8. Wow! I'm really glad I work in a very quiet library where people type in their search queries. Actually the entire library isn't quiet but I work in the adult area where I get shushed by patrons.

  9. Too funny! I've had a couple of "surprises" doing image searches when typing into Google (not Google speak), so I'm not surprised there's a potential for um…miscommunications?...with Siri.

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
