Don't Go BOOM

I saw this Mental Floss quiz in my Facebook feed. And I had to try it. I got 4 states in...and BOOM! Lost.

Let me explain. You start out at South Carolina, and then you need to name a state that borders it. Don't worry, you're given a hint. The first letter of the next state.

But there's a catch. If you guess wrong, it's game over.

I can't let such things lie, so I went back and tried again. A few times. Eventually, I got through the whole thing. (OK, I cheated a little. I did consult a United States map. But only for a few of them.)

You have 5 minutes. You hit the play button, and then you're typing in the box at the top of the screen. You don't need to worry about capitalizing, but your spelling should be fairly close. Once you've completed typing in the state's name, you don't have to hit enter or anything--the quiz will either accept it or go BOOM on you.

Good luck...

Name the Next Bordering State

Did you make it all the way through?

  2. I got four right and then blew it with Ohio from Arkansas; should have been Oklahoma I'm thinking.

  6. I did much, much better than I expected, but it was all luck. The first state was Georgia, and from there it followed the exact route I drove when I moved from California to Atlanta, then the route when I moved to Seattle from California. Since I've lived on the Pacific Coast nearly my entire life, I know the western states. If They'd started me in the Midwest, I wouldn't have got past one. I have always been geographically challenged.

  7. I'll have to try! I wonder if there's one where you have to name all the state capitals. I can still do that.
And Liz, you're so good about visiting and I always forget - following you now so I remember!

  8. I got got 79% and blanked at Ohio -- M with close to a minute left. I should have gotten that one immediately. My parents lived in Toledo, Ohio for a couple of years while I was in college in Minnesota. The times I flew to see them, I flew to Detroit because it was the closest airport with a direct flight (and the cheapest to fly to). It helps that I spent my childhood in New England, a few years on the West Coast and not my whole life in the Midwest. Or maybe because one of my favorite toys as a child was a wooden map of the United States (each state was a puzzle piece).

  9. I used to have Jeopardy competitions with my husband and I secretly memorised all the U.S. states and their capitals to get an advantage but I've forgotten them now and would be hopeless at this. We only have seven states in Australia so it would be a cinch to do it for our country.

  10. Oh poo. I'll have to play this game later. However, how hard is it to name at least one state bordering South Carolina. Duh. North Carolina.
