Windfall

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements.
😉

What if you received a random check for $5000? (It's your money. Legally. No mistake was made.)

  1. Answering for my husband and myself, we'd save about a thousand for a trip and squirrel most of the rest away. I'd lobby to donate at least several hundred to a deserving charity.

  3. Save most of it and donate at least $500 to our church.

  5. Dump some in the bank and give the rest to charity.

  6. Charity and trouble. The only problem: which charities? So many nonprofits need help. So many businesses, too. So much suffering. So much pain.

  7. whoo hoo! I'd pay my hubby's Credit Card and place it into savings maybe to get the downstairs bathroom done(2 1/2 yrs since pipes burst, a week before my mom died and 2 wks before my car accident). It would be so nice to not have to climb the stairs at 3am to go pee.

  8. I'd buy the items on my "to buy if I ever can" list. 2 yards of raised bed soil, a newer iPhone (I use a 5c), a newer but used stove, an eye exam, and put the rest towards a bill. Maybe gently used living room furniture (see a pattern? I rarely buy new!) if the cats promise to behave this time.

  9. OK, let t's try this again. I would donate the whole thing to LARS, a local charity that helps people avoid evictions, pay utility bills, etc. LARS also runs a food pantry. Their resources have been stretched to the absolute limit during the pandemic.

  10. I'd be selfish and pay off some bills but would give the usual amount we would give to our church.

  12. 10% to help someone out and the rest I would bank so when the time comes that I can go see my grandkids again it'll be a long visit!

  13. Good one ... I would save some; give some to a charity; use the rest to travel to and see places I want to.

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
