175 Essential Horror Movies

Last week was a slow week subbing. (It might be like this for a while. We'll see.) So, that means it's a random Friday quiz.

Since it's October, I figured a good horror movie list would be fitting.

Horror Movies - 175 Essentials

So, I'm a horror movie wuss. I do not like them. I avoid them. Which just means that you'll have to be the judge as to whether or not these are really the "essentials".

I have seen 11 of the 175. I consider that a high number for me. Of those 11, I'd only recommend The Frighteners. I do love that movie.

So, how'd you do? If you're a horror movie person, are those movies essentials?

  1. So, in my younger years I loved watching Horror movies. But now, I just can't. The only thing that doesn't seem to give me anxiety anymore is when horror is combined with significant amounts of science fiction (think "Alien"). Then I can watch it and not feel anxiety. Rather, I'm kind of caught up in the wonder of all the science fiction. But yeah...a hard pass on horror. That is, unless animated shows like "Hotel Transylvania" count.

    1. This list included The Frighteners, so yeah, the animated stuff counts.

  2. I've seen a hundred and thirty-three of them.
Impressed they listed Tetsuo: The Iron Man. I always thought Eraserhead was the weirdest film in the world until I watched Tetsuo. And Carnival of Souls? That film is so bad, both RiffTrax and MST3K have riffed it!

    1. So, a couple non-essentials, then. Good to know. Since they didn't credit a database I'm familiar with, I was trusting them on this one. It sounds like most lists of this sort, hit or miss.

  3. Surprisingly I've seen 21 but not the true blue horror flicks. I've seen mostly the not so scary ones. The horror flicks would give me nightmares.

    1. I don't get why people like being scared, but apparently there are a lot of them.

  4. If the horror bit is mixed in with other things like sharp humor or political commentary, then I'd watch 'em. Friday the 13th type flicks always gave me the willies.

    1. I think some of those on the list have that element. I've never been a fan of slasher pics, myself.

  5. I've seen 66 out of 175, which is better than I've done on any of these movie lists you've posted. I generally like horror movies--for some reason, scary movies never scare me.

  6. I've seen 13 and actually I'm surprised I saw tht many. Some were classics (like Dracula and Frankenstein, and even the original Dawn of the Dead). But Beetlejuice - really? There was one modern one I really enjoyed - Cloverfield. I wish the sequel had been decent - it was so panned that I didn't even bother. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

    1. I heard good things about Cloverfield. I was tempted to see it. But the horror of it all won out, and I skipped it.

  7. I'm not a big fan of horror movies, but The Shinning would be one of my favorites. I also liked Aliens and The Thing, but those have a strong Sci Fi theme, which I enjoy. On a side note, our granddaughter starts school next week, and her teacher just resigned a couple days ago. The teacher has her elderly parents living with her and is afraid of the exposure. What a mess!

  8. I didn't take the quiz because I don't like horror movies either and I don't think I've seen one in YEARS. I have too vivid of an imagination to watch them LOL.

  9. Hi Liz - I too haven't looked as I don't like them ... probably can handle them now - but back in the day ... Dracula, Frankenstein et al ... horrified me ... take care - Hilary

  10. I didn't watch them, maybe this year. Thank you for recommendation.

  11. I am a two star person, 18%. I am not a fan of horror movies. It seems like a lot of people are surprised that since I am pagan I would be into horror movies.

  12. I saw 47 of these because I don’t like to be too scared. I have seen parts of Alien but as soon as that thing pops out of John Hurt’s body, I leave. Repulsion, to me is more of a thriller and one you might like. I also love Fright Night which is funny especially Roddy McDowell and the special effects are excellent.

  13. 15 - I don't do horror movies either, but ones like Jaws and Beetlejuice and some others I do not put in there with horror movies. I loved Tremors! haha.....and they are coming out with a new one.

    1. I know. How is Beetlejuice a horror movie? That's where the 11 I saw fit, I think.

  14. I saw 107 of them and wrote down some titles that were on the list. :) Many I'd not seen were either foreign films or really old. I didn't know that "What We Do in the Shadows" was a movie before becoming a series. Be well!

    1. Glad it was a useful list for you. I did know about WWDINS. I read about it somewhere. Still haven't seen either movie or series.

  15. I loved horror movies like psychosis. Today I don't watch many films, but I loved the post. Your blog is incredible that I'm already following. kisses https://beperes.blogspot.com/

  16. Horror movies spoil the peace of mind. Of course, they provide us inquisitiveness to see the climax, but till then we remain tensed.

  17. 75/175 But a lot of these movies are scifi, in my opinion, like Alien and some are too funny to be scary like Cabin in the Woods and Shaun of Dead.
