A Ninja Turtle
Seventh grade special ed world history. They're studying the Renaissance.
We had a few paragraphs to read. Then they had some multiple choice questions to answer. As they were special ed, we were doing them together.
Question number 3: Who was Michelangelo?
Very faintly, from the back, I heard, "A Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle."
I pounced.
(The Ninja Turtles were huge when I worked at the evil toy store. And, he wasn't wrong.)
I had the kiddos recall the names of the Ninja Turtles. Raphael. Leonardo. Michelangelo. Donatello.
Then I informed them that the Ninja Turtles were named after Renaissance artists.
Ahem.
It's a stupid random piece of trivia. I love throwing out stupid random pieces of trivia. Silly, I know...

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.

Hi Liz - it clicked into place ... for the moment - I didn't know about the toys!! Cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteSo cute. And I didn't know that about the Ninja Turtles being named after Renaissance artists, but now looking at the list, yep, they were. My kids weren't too much into those particular action figures.
ReplyDeletebetty
Yeah but I bet they liked that went along with them, plus you let them where the turtles' names came from :)
ReplyDeleteThe guys who came up with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were brilliant. All four words are so unrelated that it is crazy.
ReplyDeleteAnd informing them about the classics---excellent.
I appreciate them more now. The first time someone asked for them at the toy store... They had to repeat it several times, and then a fellow worker had to clue me in (she had kids, so she was familiar).
DeleteI hated that these Ninja Turtles were named after famous artists but if that got the kids to check into class for a few minutes to learn about these great artists then why not
ReplyDeleteIt's one way to keep those names memorable to a generation. Every little bit helps.
DeleteWait, there are people who didn't know that? I guess they're kids after all. I think I always knew that they were named after Renaissance artists. I'd never have been able to remember any of those if they weren't also turtles.
ReplyDeleteMy son grew up with the Turtles so I know these guys all so well. Funny, I find myself sitting here trying to remember what color each one was....Donnie - purple? Raphael - red I think. Leonardo - Blue so that would leave Mikie as orange. HAHA...I sort of remembered but a couple yrs ago I went over them again cause I painted several series of them. I actually loved watching those movies with my kids. Great trivia to throw out at the kids.
ReplyDeleteThen you know more than me. I know which aisle they were on... (7C, in case you were wondering.)
DeleteRenaissance time period had always fascinated me, but history always has.
ReplyDeleteCoffee is on
Love random trivia and that is one I already knew. Did they appreciate the link?
ReplyDeleteLove it! You must be the best sub ever! :)
ReplyDeleteHighly doubtful.
DeleteI agree with Mandy. ~grin~ Take care!
ReplyDeleteYeah... no. Not even close.
DeleteI loved TMNT when I was kid and had that fact memorized. LOL
ReplyDeleteI'm rather shocked it isn't still common knowledge.
DeleteLOL cute :) I knew that one, too! Woo!
