Fine Tuning

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements. ðŸ˜‰

I've been a bit klutzy lately. Losing my balance and swaying (not falling). Running into doorways. Nothing out of the ordinary, just a bit more so. But what if it isn't me...

What if the world makes little shifts in matter around us? Nothing we'd notice, necessarily. Just occasional adjustments that only effect those in motion at that moment.

  1. I would hope the earth is making little shifts because I do what you're experiencing all the time. I bump constantly into walls or other inanimate objects and stumble at times. Rather blame the earth than myself :)

  2. So that's the reason I bump into things. I have bumped into the side of the doorway and blame it on the door.

    1. Yeah, I've been doing a lot of that lately.

  3. Yeah, but we're always in motion since the Earth is spinning around the sun, and around the galaxy. What would be the difference if we're also walking around on the Earth? (I know it's a dumb thing to get hung up on, but that's my brain for you)

  4. Ooh... Wondering what could be the cause is real food for the imagination. Thank you for this. I hope you don't get hurt. I'm a klutz, too, and bruise easily. DH jokes that I'm going to get him into trouble some day (as if anyone could believe him capable of violence against me). Be well!

    1. Yup. That's the fun of what ifs. If you follow the logic down the rabbit hole, what sort of story emerges?

  5. I'm constantly saying the door/door frame/desk/etc moved and hit me hahahaha

  6. I'd probably be very clumsy. lol

  7. That seemed to be happening to me yesterday. More mental clumsiness than physical fumbling. I don't mind blaming that on the earth's or the universe's movements.

  8. Haha... in
My case then it is shifting and changing all day long and my body is reacting! Between the fibro and the meds I slam into doorways all the time, or take a missed step! I am great st stumbling all around... so with that said my world needs to stop shifting!

    1. Yeah, it's kind of a common occurrence, isn't it?

    2. Yep....should have seen me stumbling while dancing at the reunion, so funny but at least I could make it look like it was a planned move.

  9. Yes, here is the SF reader saying there have been books on this topic. But, how would we react? It's bad enough when you age and you feel like your vision isn't keeping up with your walking - it's not a good feeling, that lack of balance.

    1. Yeah, it isn't. How it works in a story would depend on where you put the focus.

  10. Yes, yes! I'm pretty sure this is true. I definitely go through phases where I'm more klutzy than usual…

  11. In one episode of "That 70's Show" [SPOILER ALERT!] they are having the basement redecorated, but the decorator - have you seen it? No? Yes? Don't watch it? Don't care? Okay, I'll spoil it - ends up keeping it as is, but 2 inches to the left.

    1. Too funny. (Never watched it, so you're not spoiling anything ;)

  12. Well I could get on board with that explanation for my stumblings. lol

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
