Overcoming Your Demons

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements.
😉

The other day I was watching The Story of God on Netflix, and as often happens, my mind wandered. I had this thought:

What if demons aren't actually evil? What if they've just been viciously slandered (libeled?) for centuries?

  1. Well, that could happen and I would listen to them. By the way, have you watched “Good Omens”? It’s a great miniseries with an angel and a demon as friends and the demon, wonderfully played by David Tennant, is misunderstood.

    1. "Good Omens" was delightful. It's another classic Neil Gaiman story. And I just learned that the narration was by Frances McDormand, another great member of the cast. This concept also reminds me of the fabulous movie "Jacob's Ladder". I don't think I could do this theme justice compared to those. lol

    2. Good Omens is on a service I do not get. I've been meaning to read the book. Maybe one of these days.

    3. Oh, read it! At least before watching! I love Crowley, he's so much more fun than Aziraphale.

  2. Well then I would have to hug a few demons today lol.

  3. Reminds me of Phillip Pullman's trilogy of books (now a series on HBO) His Dark Materials. In Pullman's world, 'daemons' are our soul/an extension of who we are, but in tangible form. Pretty trippy stuff.

    1. Different kind of demon. Although, maybe not. (I saw season 1.)

  4. Well, it could be quite possible. But on the other hand, I wouldn't want to assume they were really good....

  5. I hadn't heard of this series. I'm going to check it out as I FINALLY finished 13 Reasons Why and the 5th Season of Greenleaf. Can't really come up with an answer to your question though so I'll pass on answering it for this week :)

  6. I can't really answer that "what if," as it's based on the assumption that demons do exist. It makes an interesting twist for fiction though. Like I mentioned in a reply above, one literary demon, Crowley, is a quite an engaging character!

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
