Offered for Sale

"Would you like to buy my AirPods?"

Tuesday. Period four. World history (sophomores). It was day two of a week-long assignment.

Alan only asked me about the AirPods (and gave me the hard sell) when I questioned why he wasn't in his seat. He explained that he had to sell them. He was looking for a buyer.

Alan gave me a sob story about needing money to contribute to his mom for *mumble mumble mumble*. While this may be true, the whole scenario played out less like a needing-the-money and more like a game Alan played.

In a middle school class, this would have been chaos. But the older kiddos have learned (mostly) to not be distracted by such silliness.

Alan showed off his ware to a friend. He demonstrated its features. The friend looked at it, but decided against. He tried a couple other of his classmates.

At one point, Alan even went over to a girl on the other side of the room when she expressed interest. He returned, his AirPods still in his possession.

Did he do any work that period? (The assignment was a Cold War Webquest.) Doubtful. (To be fair, it was day two of the assignment. He could have finished it the prior day.)

Do you have need of a used set of AirPods? They may be broken as I heard him drop them on Thursday. They may be counterfeit. And we have no guarantee that they work. (He was still "selling them" on Friday.)

Do you believe his story? If you needed quick cash, what item of yours would you sell?

Today's A to Z Challenge post brought to you by the letter...

  1. "See what I have? I have Air Pods!"

When my dauhter was in high school, her best friend was showing off a new cell phone. My daugher was playing with it when the assistant principal came by...and I had to make a little trip to his office ot rescue the phone.

    1. Sigh. I have to admit, I've confiscated phones in just that circumstance. Teens sometimes don't think.

    1. You're better than me at that. I wouldn't even know where to send one.

  3. I'd sell some Waterford crystal stuff. Wouldn't harvest much $$ but maybe lunch money.

    1. I thought at one time that stuff was very pricey. Not so much any more?

  4. Tell him to stop. Oh no, he has airpods in, he can't hear you.

  5. Well at least Alan got you to help him with his air pod problems. Nows the time he really needs to tow the line. I'd probably sell my coin collection which is over a hundred years old, bound to fetch a few quan.

  6. I’ve been trying to get rid of a stove and there are no takers. I wonder if he found a buyer

    1. Not as of Friday. I don't think he was really trying that hard, though.

  7. Do any of the kids you encounter care anything about graduating? haha....I always think the worst in cases like someone trying to sell something so fast for fast cash.

    1. The ones I write about rarely do. It's the ones that keep their heads down and do their work that I rarely write about.

    2. That makes sense. Do the not so caring ones out weigh the ones that want to learn and graduate?

    3. In this particular class, for an example, there was Alan and maybe the four students he talked to. The rest of the 30-ish students were working. That's the usual breakdown, in the general classes. The "interesting" classes have more Alans.

  8. Not sure what would bring in fast cash around my place. It amazing what people will buy. My youngest son when he was younger he sold something from on line game.

  9. First off, I am so out of touch, I have no idea what "airpods" are. Are they like Air Jordans? (dating myself, there) or like an iPod? From one comment above I'm guessing they are like earbuds? I'll have to google it.

Second, I actually inherited a couple of valuable antique items from my grandma. If I was desperate for cash, they could probably go. They're just sitting in storage in the States right now anyway.

    1. I did put a link in the post so you could see what they are. They are cordless earbuds.

  10. I have never found selling something a good way to make quick cash. It is a great way to clean out the closet, though. I tend to be a bit to emotionally attached to stuff. I think it's because of the uncertainty in our lives right now. There are things I could see donating, but I've read that you should wait about 6 months after someone dies to make big changes like that. Too often people regret getting rid of a loved ones belongings, when it is done too soon. One Thing A Day to Avoid Burnout

    1. 6 months? I think I'd wait at least a year, especially for someone close.

And yeah, selling things is probably not the best way to make some cash. I didn't say Alan was terribly bright.

  11. I have to admit I had to look up what AirPods were. Do we know for sure they were his AirPods or did he conveniently take them from someone else? I'm not sure what I would sell. I don't have a lot of stuff cause I like to get things minimal. I would probably sell the tablet, old as it is.

  12. Hi Liz - I wouldn't try to sell anything in school. What would I sell ... probably not much as everyone has most things and mine are all well used! Cheers Hilary

  13. If I had to make some quick cash I'd probably try and sell homemade cakes and cookies.
Isn't there a policy at school that says students are not supposed to do any dealing or selling? Not to the teachers, not to the students? I find that highly irritating.
Do you know what is going on in this boy's life?

    1. Oh yes, I'm sure there are rules somewhere that say he can't. The only exception is for school sponsored fundrasiers. I didn't even think about writing him up for that. Because, yeah, I could've.

  14. I am actually mulling over selling some old needlework patterns on Facebook. It is fairly painless and clears my house at the same time.

  16. If I had Air Pods I would be selling them too! I feel like they are the silliest looking trend I've seen in the long time - I'm obviously getting OLD!

    1. They are silly looking, but it's nice to not have that cord. If only they could make them look cuter.

  17. Well, I haven't tried selling something to make quick bucks. Not quite sure if it works. May be, may not. Depends of what one is trying to see and to whom.
