Irritable

Some days...

It was Friday, and my day up until that point had been fairly uneventful. I was asked to cover an extra period (naturally) for sixth period, and it was next door. I had a chance to talk to the teacher before she left.

Ms. M apologized for the class. There were only seventeen of them, but they had way more energy than anyone should have at the end of the day, she said.

They weren't out of the ordinary for a middle school class. They wouldn't settle to let me give instructions. There was the boy who thought he didn't have to sit in his assigned seat. Well, three boys. I had to stop the video four or five times because they were talking. And getting anyone to read the article (this was after the video)... They'd read when I insisted, but it took them forever to comply.

After taking way too long to settle them (again) for the next reader to go, I had just had it. They could answer the questions and finish the reading on their own.

They did, but they did it way too quickly.

Sigh.

Some days, I just don't have the energy for them. Stuff that should roll off my back irritates me no end. This day, I was just irritable.

They can't all be good days, I guess.

What irritates you no end? Do you have any energy at the end of the day?

Today's A to Z Challenge post brought to you by the letter...

  1. On a Friday sixth period, I can see why you were irritable with them especially if it was a constant struggled to get them to do the work. I get irritated with English as second language physicians who dictate and use the word "para" instead of paragraph when they want to move on to a new paragraph. Its like fingernails on a chalkboard. I have absolutely no energy at the beginning of the day so absolutely none at the end of the day :)

    1. Imagine 17 of them... Well, no. It was more like 5. The rest were keeping their heads down.

  3. Sometimes we just need holidays, and to rest. No more kids!

  4. I barely have energy at the beginning of the day. Honestly, you have way more patience with them than I'd have.

  5. Things sometimes become frantically busy at my job, and I can certainly feel irritable (and tired) by the end of the day. the only bright side is, it got you a post for "I" day.

  6. As a teacher you can't have all good days and good behavior from students. Yes. You have to learn to keep your spirit and energy high. Some days you own behavior may be bad also. I am also a teacher and appreciate your posts on teaching. My A to Z blog posts are on management. Today my blog post had 126 page views so far which I consider as a good first day performance.

    1. That is a great stat. I'd like to get that many views myself :)

    2. I consider 100 page views on first day as a promising start for the blog post.

  7. As I age my energy level sure isn't what it was once. Now for irritable would be a person who lies and smirk about it.

  8. Sounds like a rough afternoon.

I work in an office with an open floor plan. My workstation shares a wall with “Joe’s” workstation, we sit facing each other. He’s not a bad person, he’s actually quite popular with the folks in his department. But everything he does just gets on my nerves. I was so happy when he was on vacation.

    1. I know what you mean. Sometimes people irritate you for no good reason. Proximity is definitely an irritant.

  9. I could never do your job. Just being around children exhausts me. I can't blame you for feeling irritable. Be well!

  10. Liz,

What irritates me is to watch how people drive. There are some real idiots out there. I can't figure out if they ever learned how to drive right in the first place or that they are distracted with technology to notice that they are about to cause an accident or maybe it's a combination of both with a dash of 'I don't really care' thrown in the mix.

I do not envy your job. The teaching of other people's kids is hard work especially when the parents think their kids poor grades are the fault of the teacher instead of their precious. Are these the same idiots I see on the road? Probably.

Thanks for visiting yesterday's A2z art sketch H is for 'HAMMERHEAD' shark from The Little Mermaid series. Happy a2zing, my friend! ;)

  11. I would never have the patience you have. I would always be irritable. I get irritated by people who talk over me and ask questions I have already answered and answered.....and answered. Smelly clients also get to me the most recent being the man who peed in the chair and smelled like a combination of pee and old man. By the end of the day, I have no energy left.

    1. I'm sorry. That sucks. I don't know if I have patience. I have been known to not answer when a student asks a question I have clearly answered multiple times. At least they don't pee in class (although, I shouldn't tempt fate).

  12. Apparently, guests cleaning my house irritates me no end. My recent houseguest was Chinese, and they have different customs. She is a sweet friend, and Brett did not understand why I kept trying to make her stop doing dishes. "She's such a bad guest for helping!"

I realized that when my guest feels like they have to clean up after a meal, it seems like an accusation that I am an inadequate host. Next time we have a houseguest, I'll have to create a sign with the rules.

    1. Definitely. Or perhaps an admonition upon them arriving: "You're to relax and let me do all the work..." ;)

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
