Not the Heat

The weather in southern California last week was pretty nice. We had chilly nights (down into the high 40s/lower 50s) and warm days (upper 70s/mid 80s).

So, about mid day I needed a bit of the air conditioner. And while the room was a bit cool in the morning, I didn't think it was that cold. I'd walk into the room being at 64 degrees. (This is Fahrenheit, in case you're reading this from outside the U.S. That's about 18 degrees Celsius.)

With student bodies, that temperature creeps up all on its own. (That and the warming day outside.) So, I didn't feel the need to turn on the heat.

But the students... Oh, they were freezing. I had to put on the heat.

(Which just seemed like a waste of time and energy to me. It wasn't that cold. And it was warming up all on its own.)

When I refused to do this, a student decided he'd turn the heat on himself. Only...

Notice how it says "cool setting"? And 83 degrees? That's overkill.

(When I took the picture, it was 69 degrees in the class. When he was messing with the thermostat, it was 66-67 degrees. And that time? Yeah, it's not set correctly. It was closer to 11 AM when I took the picture.)

He has since figured out how to put it on the heat setting. But he's still not getting it to work. Because of other issues, the HVAC is turned off at the breaker box. However, I'm not about to tell him that. No. I just told him the heater is broken.

Cheating? Perhaps. But at least I'm not being blasted with unnecessary heat.

  1. Naughty kiddo, we'd have gotten in major trouble for even touching that.

    1. Ideally, yeah. But it's a battle I don't want to fight.

    1. And it wasn't that cold. I did turn on the heat earlier to take the chill off when it was very cold. (I'm in SoCal, so "very cold" is 61 degrees.)

  3. I'm a person who runs cold, but I've just learned to add more layers. Because it's usually always okay to put on a coat, but it's not okay to take off one's shirt!

    1. Exactly. And it wasn't unreasonably cold. I'm not a monster.

  4. Clever!
Who wants to be too hot? Heat makes people sleepy.

  5. You Californians and your perceptions of what's cold. I'd like to see him survive up north for a week!

    1. Amen.

Meanwhile, I keep my house at 63 year round. If it's at 65, I need to sleep with a fan.

  6. lol. 😂 I keep the temperature in my house set to the 60s-70s pretty regularly. And given that I live in Georgia where it's not quite as warm as SoCal but still pretty warm, I think I understand. I'd be enjoying the cooler weather. Who needs 80+ degrees? There is enough of that in the summer.

    1. I know, right? But at that point, I think he just wanted to blast heat because he was COLD. (Doesn't matter that he was the only cold student.)

  7. I'd be chilled at 64. Heh... But eighties? Ugh... We have our thermostat set at 68-70 F. Stay cool!

    1. It was 64 when I got there. By the time 2nd period rolled around, it was more like 66. And they're all in long sleeves, sweatshirts, hoodies, and the like.

  8. I'm very jealous of your weather! That does seem pointless to turn the heat on when it's that cold and rapidly warming up anyway.

    1. We don't really have winter in SoCal. We're looking at a cold snap for next week. Our coldest day right now has a projected high of 59.

  9. I so love your definition of "cold". We would be so happy with a high of 50 - except in this exceptional year when we may be in the 60's by next week. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

    1. If you're in the 60s next week, we'll have comparable weather. Of course, for us this is a cold snap.
